About the Interpreting Department:

The Interpreting department is comprised of a small team of skilled sign language interpreters with varying degrees of experience from emerging professionals to those with many years of certification.

Our interpreters strive to create a supportive and collaborative work environment, fostering for mentorship and professional growth opportunities.


The work includes providing professional interpreting service for employees, students, and various stakeholders within educational and office settings. Our team provides exemplary service in-person and via remote technology platforms.

About the position:

CDHY is seeking to fill a part-time permanent ASL Interpreter position.

This position provides interpreting services to deaf and hard of hearing staff members, students, community members, various stakeholders, educational and government professionals and/or parents for a variety of activities and events including trainings, meetings, conferences and student events.

This position is benefits eligible. This position requires inherent flexibility in terms of working schedule, travel, and client-base.

Requirements

  • Interprets in K-12 mainstream settings for deaf and hard of hearing individuals.
  • Provides professional in-person and remote language interpreting services for a variety of activities including meetings, trainings, events, classroom activities, and conferences.
  • Interprets spoken language into sign language and vice versa during meetings, events, conferences, trainings, classroom lessons, appointments, and other events.
  • Maintains the highest standards of confidentiality and privacy of the individuals involved in communication.
  • Prepares for assignments by reviewing materials and understanding the context of the conversation.
  • Adapt interpretation based on the cultural context and the individuals’ communication style and needs.
  • Provides coaching and shares information about deaf culture to hearing individuals as needed.
  • Ensures the accuracy of the interpreted information.
  • Works with other interpreters to deliver exemplary service as assigned.

Qualifications

Required Qualifications:

  • Ability to interpret fluently between American Sign Language and spoken English in a variety of settings and modalities.
  • Successful completion of an accredited Interpreter Training Program (please attach transcripts to application).
  • Current RID certification.
  • Passing score of EIPA written exam and performance score of 4.5 or higher.
  • Ability to adhere to RID Code of Professional Conduct.
  • Two years of experience interpreting in an educational setting.
  • 3 or more years of experience in professional interpreting.
  • Must have good organizational skills, ability to work independently and as a team member, and ability to maintain confidentiality and professionalism.
  • Must be willing and able to travel within Washington state via state vehicle, train, and/or airplane.
  • Must be willing and able to sit or stand for prolonged periods of time.
  • Must be willing and able to work independently or as teammate.
  • Must possess a strong understanding of deaf/hard of hearing culture and its nuances.
  • Must have the ability to accurately convey information with respect for the context and the individuals involved.
  • Must demonstrate exceptional communication and interpersonal skills.
  • Must manage time effectively.
  • Have the ability to use various software applications including Microsoft Office products (Outlook, Excel, Word, etc.)

Preferred Qualifications:

  • Two-year college degree.
  • Familiarity with common computer programs such as the Microsoft Office suite, Zoom as well as the ability to utilize online scheduling platforms given basic training.
  • Some experience working with Deaf/Blind/Low-vision consumers.
  • Experience serving as a mentor.

Salary Information:

Salary is set using the State of Washington General government pay scales (Range 56).


Vacation and sick leave accrual, paid holidays, personal holiday, personal leave day, and overtime eligible after 40 hours of work in a week.
