Full Job Description

Each position is located at one of the eleven (11) AREA III bus maintenance shops and does NOT float between shops. In the supplemental questions, please indicate your preferred shop assignments.

Area III shops include: Abbeville, Anderson, Fairfield, Greenville, Greenwood, Johnston, Laurens, Newberry, Oconee, Pickens, and Taylors counties.

The person in this position will inspect and perform preventive maintenance on vehicles following the prescribed daily, weekly, monthly, and yearly maintenance policies, rules, and regulations. Report major preventive maintenance problems to Shop Foreman or Assistant Foreman immediately. Evaluate, diagnose, and repair routine maintenance failure problems and immediately report major problems to Shop Foreman or Assistant Foreman. Perform required maintenance checks and inspection of assigned state vehicles and maintain required fluid levels. As directed, respond to service calls to determine the severity of the problem. Make repairs to vehicles, or when needed, report to Supervisor for additional assistance. Inspect, diagnose, and repair (overhauls) vehicle components. Restore component parts to Original Equipment Manufacturer (OEM) requirements. Maintain assigned service truck parts inventory and other state equipment daily. Maintain accurate records in the use of parts and truck parts inventory according to state guidelines. Keep parts clean and organized, and equipment clean, organized, and in good operating condition. Perform job in compliance with Weather, Safety, and Environmental policies and procedures using the available Personal Protection Equipment as required. Provide other services in support of the school bus maintenance shop or the Office of Transportation mission as instructed by the Foreman or Assistant Foreman.

Requirements

Work experience involving the independent performance of job duties directly related to the area of employment.

Qualifications

Two (2) years of mechanical experience in automotive or related repair; or any combination of training and experience that would enable an applicant to acquire the necessary knowledge, skills and abilities. Required to lift objects weighing 50 pounds and to move objects weighing 125 pounds 30 feet. Must be able to operate power, hydraulic and electronic equipment. Must possess or acquire within 120 calendar days a valid Class A or B CDL with Tank Vehicle, Passenger and Air Brake endorsements, Tanker Operation certification, and criminal background check. Successful candidates will be extended an offer of conditional probationary employment, at which time they will be required to submit to and pass a drug screening for illegal drugs and must pass the SDE/USDOT medical exam.
