Salary Range: $41194.00 - $71789.00 - Class Title: Archaeologist 2
The Lead Curator will oversee all archaeological and curation processes at Grave Creek Mound Archaeological Complex, including the analysis of artifacts in the onsite laboratory and preservation of artifacts in Grave Creek's repository of archaeological collections.
The Department of Tourism seeks a skilled archaeological researcher and dedicated professional to fill this role. The Lead Curator will perform and supervise professional archaeological work involving the identification, evaluation, preservation, and interpretation of archaeological sites and artifacts. They will also collaborate with other staff on the development of exhibits and programs. This role requires attention to detail, as the position is responsible for ensuring compliance with state and federal regulations, as well as preparing detailed reports.
The Lead Curator reports directly to the Site Manager of the Grave Creek Mound Archaeological Complex. In this role, the Lead Curator will also work closely with the West Virginia State Museum and State Historic Preservation Office, both under the umbrella of the Department of Tourism.

Requirements
Examples of Work- May Lead or supervise other archaeologists and professionals
- Act as an expert in identifying and interpreting artifacts
- Analyze artifacts and site data to determine historical and cultural significance
- Study material culture to reconstruct the lifeways of past populations in West Virginia and the surrounding region
- Collaborate with other professionals, including historians, anthropologists and environmental scientists, to assess project impacts on archaeological resources.
- Prepare reports and documentation of findings for state and federal agencies
- Conduct public outreach and education programs related to archaeological findings and cultural heritage
- Ensure compliance with state and federal historic preservation laws and regulations
- Develop and implement archaeological resource management plans
- Provide recommendations for the preservation and protection of archaeological sites
- Review construction and development plans to assess potential impacts on archaeological resources
- Catalogue and curate artifacts recovered during fieldwork
- Digitize collection records
- May lead or supervise field crews and volunteers in excavation and data collection techniques
- May supervise, plan and conduct surveys and excavations to identify and evaluate archaeological sites
- Present archaeological research and findings at professional conferences to contribute to the advancement of the field and engage with industry experts
Qualifications
Knowledge, Skills, and Abilities:- Knowledge of the principles, practices and techniques of archaeology.
- Knowledge of the techniques of archaeological excavation and the processing and analysis of historical artifacts.
- Knowledge of preservation or restoration methods for archaeological sites.
- Knowledge of sources and methods of historical research.
- Knowledge of artifact cataloging, curation and conservation techniques.
- Knowledge of state and federal historic preservation laws and regulations, especially the Native American Grave Protection and Repatriation Act (NAGPRA).
- Knowledge of environmental and geological factors influencing archaeological sites.
- Knowledge of Tribal Nations with ancestral homelands in West Virginia.
- Skill in distinguishing between human remains and faunal material.
- Skill in research and analysis for interpreting archaeological data.
- Skill in problem-solving to address excavation challenges and site preservation issues.
- Skill in data collection and statistical analysis.
- Skill in public engagement and education outreach.
- Ability to plan and conduct archaeological research projects and excavations.
- Ability to analyze and interpret complex archaeological data.
- Ability to assess and mitigate the impacts of construction and development on archaeological sites.
- Ability to write clear and comprehensive reports and documents.
- Ability to work in challenging outdoor conditions, including remote locations and varying weather.
- Ability to engage with government agencies, cultural organizations, Tribal Nations and the public on archaeological issues.

Preferred Qualifications:Training: Master's degree from an accredited college or university in archaeology, anthropology, or a related field.
Substitution: Experience as described below may substitute for the required training at a rate of one (1) year of experience for every fifteen (15) semester hours of the graduate training and/or every thirty (30) semester hours of the undergraduate training.
Experience: Three (3) years of full-time or equivalent part-time paid experience in archaeological surveys, excavations, analysis, regulation or site management activities.
Distinguishing Characteristics: Archaeologist II positions are distinguished by performing lead or supervisory responsibilities and also acting as expert consultants.
