This job involves reviewing unemployment compensation appeals, conducting fair hearings, and writing clear decisions to help people challenge benefit rulings.
You'll also supervise a small team and travel occasionally to different sites in Pennsylvania.
It's a great fit for someone with legal experience in labor issues who enjoys analyzing facts and ensuring fair processes.
Do you want to examine facts, construct clear and concise decisions, and help ensure that every person can exercise their right to appeal an unemployment compensation (UC) decision?
Join the Department of Labor & Industry’s UC Board of Review, Lancaster Referee Office as an Appeals Referee.
If you have the labor law or UC experience and training needed to conduct hearings and issue decisions on appeals cases in a timely and impartial manner, we invite you to apply!

An Appeals Referee hears and decides first level appeals of UC appeals, serving as a hearing officer for second level appeals as needed.
You will review UC appeals in preparation for each hearing, conduct hearings as scheduled, supervise clerical staff, travel to hearing sites, and issue decisions.
This includes following and explaining rules of evidence, due process standards, and standard administrative practice to move the proceedings to conclusion, as well as issuing decisions that are supported by legally sufficient findings of fact, explain all legal issues present in a case, and provide reasoning for decisions reflecting the application of the law to a particular set of facts.
Responsibilities involve interpreting policy and procedure as received from UC Law and regulations, precedent decisions in case law, and other instructions.
You will also be expected to train, advise, and oversee activities by subordinate staff who help facilitate appeals processing within the office, resolve complaints and grievances, supervise clerical support staff, prepare performance reviews for such employees, and approve or disapprove leave requests.
