Job Description

Summary

This job involves hands-on maintenance and repair of a massive very low frequency (VLF) antenna system used for naval communications, including climbing tall towers, inspecting cables and grounds, and performing routine upkeep on equipment spread over a large area.

It's ideal for someone with practical experience in electrical or mechanical repairs, who is comfortable working at heights and in outdoor conditions.

A good fit would be a reliable team player with strong problem-solving skills and attention to detail for ensuring the system's reliability.

Key Requirements

  • Ability to perform antenna repairs with minimal supervision (screen-out element)
  • Experience maintaining and repairing VLF antennas, panels, and downlead systems
  • Skill in inspecting and adjusting guy anchors, tensions, and tower profiles up to 980 ft
  • Proficiency in cleaning, coating, and maintaining extensive guy cables and grounding systems
  • Knowledge of maintaining transmission line insulating gas systems and switch gears
  • Capability to inspect and repair hoists, gear boxes, and related mechanical components
  • Comfort with physical tasks like climbing, painting, wire brushing, and using tools like metal detectors

Volunteer work helps build critical competencies, knowledge, and skills and can provide valuable training and experience that translates directly to paid employment. Major Duties:

  • You will assist in the maintenance and repairs of a VLF antenna network.
  • You will inspect and repair guy anchor ground, check the guy tension, check tower profiles, and adjust the 26’ tall tower guy tensions and tower profiles.
  • You will clean and coat the 612 guy (430,000 LF) ranging from 1 to 3 1/8-inch diameter, supporting the 26’ tall tower.
  • You will change the oil in gear boxes, grease hoist spindles, grease hoist, inspect hoist drums and change gear lubricant.
  • You will replace defective jumpers in the cross-arm section, inspect, and repair through bushing.
  • You will inspect and repair 12 VLF tophat panels, 12 VLF downlead systems by lowering, painting, and wire brushing.
  • You will inspect and repair the 2200 miles of wire grounding system, spread over 3,000 acres, by checking ground continuity, and locating breaks with a metal detector.
