Job Description

Summary

This temporary seasonal job with the Bureau of Land Management involves providing administrative support, such as handling correspondence, entering time and attendance data, managing records, and assisting with budget, travel, and public contact tasks in rural Oregon locations like Prineville, Vale, or Lakeview.

It's ideal for someone with basic office experience or relevant education who enjoys short-term work in a natural resources setting and can adapt to automated systems.

Entry-level candidates with a bachelor's degree or equivalent experience would fit well for the GS-5 level, with more advanced responsibilities at higher grades.

Key Requirements

  • One year of specialized experience equivalent to GS-4 (for GS-5), including assisting with correspondence, data entry, time and attendance records, and basic automated systems
  • For GS-6: One year of experience equivalent to GS-5, including independent correspondence preparation, records management, and knowledge of budget, finance, natural resources, travel, and payroll
  • For GS-7: One year of experience equivalent to GS-6, involving complex administrative support, independent judgment in budget, records, collections, and public contact
  • Alternative: Bachelor's degree (for GS-5) or one year of related graduate education (for GS-6/7), or equivalent combination of education and experience
  • Proficiency in automated systems like email, internet, multi-line phones, and payroll software
  • Temporary seasonal appointment: Less than 6 months per year, not exceeding 1,560 hours annually

Information about the location and the surrounding area can be found at: Prineville, OR Vale, OR Lakeview, OR This is a temporary seasonal appointment, defined as employment in a position performing annually recurring work lasting less than six months per year, not to exceed 1,560 hours per service year.

No assumptions will be made about your experience. GS-5: One (1) year of specialized experience equivalent to at least GS-4 level in the federal service.

Examples of specialized experience may include assisting with general correspondence, entering time and attendance records in an automated payroll system, aiding in the entering of data and entering of records, inventories, and dispositions in accordance with records schedule.

Basic knowledge of automated systems for tasks such as electronic mail, time and attendance reporting, internet, and multi-line telephone.

-OR- Successful completion of a full 4-year course of study leading to a bachelor's degree with related course work.

-OR- You may meet qualifications requirement for this position with an equivalent combination of specialized experience and appropriate undergraduate education.

GS-6: One (1) full year of specialized experience at or equivalent to the GS-05 level in the federal service.

Examples of specialized experience may include independently preparing general correspondence, entering time and attendance records in an automated payroll system, providing assistance in the completion of records review, inventories, and dispositions in accordance with records schedule.

Additionally, a broad working knowledge of the functions related to budget and finance, natural resources, travel, timekeeping/payroll, correspondence, records, collections, and public contact.

-OR- Successful completion of one full year of graduate education directly related to the work of the position.

-OR- You may meet qualifications requirement for this position with an equivalent combination of specialized experience and appropriate graduate education.

Graduate level education must demonstrate the knowledge, skills, and abilities necessary to do the work of this position.

GS-7: One (1) full year of specialized experience equivalent to at least GS-6 level in the federal service.

Examples of specialized experience may include performing complex administrative support with general correspondence, entering time and attendance records into an automated payroll system, advising in the completion of records review, inventories, and dispositions in accordance with records schedule.

Additionally, the ability to perform independent judgement to the following functions in budget and finance, natural resources, travel, timekeeping/payroll, correspondence, records, collections, and public contact.

-OR- Successful completion of one full year of graduate education directly related to the work of the position.

-OR- You may meet qualifications requirement for this position with an equivalent combination of specialized experience and appropriate graduate education.

Graduate level education must demonstrate the knowledge, skills, and abilities necessary to do the work of this position.

Physical and Work Demands: The work is typically sedentary. Some work may require periods of walking, standing, bending, or driving a motor vehicle.

The incumbent may frequently lift relatively light boxes, materials, and supplies and /or carry file folder's copied materials, books, and other similar materials.

Work is typically located in an adequately lighted, heated, and ventilated office environment.

The work environment may involve everyday risks or discomforts that require normal safety precautions typical of such places as offices, mail distribution centers, meeting and training rooms, libraries, or motor vehicles.

Major Duties:

  • Administrative Support Assistants independently perform a wide variety of functions related to budget and finance, human resources, natural resources, travel, timekeeping/payroll, correspondence, records, collections, and public contact.
  • Administrative Support Assistants provide general information concerning office operations to the public both orally and in writing.
  • They may also serve as a collections officer preparing appropriate receipts, records, and tracking forms; depositing monies and reconcile accounts receivable.
  • Administrative Support Assistants may be expected to handle incoming/outgoing mail, manage a central filing system, both paper and electronic, and provide assistance in researching and locating files.
