This position is being recruited for in Anchorage, Soldotna, Wasilla, Fairbanks, or Juneau.
Pay will be determined based on location of selected individual.
Anchorage, Soldotna, Wasilla biweekly salary: $2,646.00
Fairbanks biweekly biweekly salary: $2,725.50
Juneau biweekly biweekly salary: $2,778.00
What you will be doing:
The Alaska Department of Environmental Conservation (ADEC), Division of Environmental Health (EH), is seeking a skilled and detail-oriented Accountant to provide professional accounting support across a diverse portfolio of funding sources.
In this role, you will support the fiscal integrity of the division through accurate reconciliations, compliant grant accounting, and clear, data-driven financial reporting.
You will play a central part in ensuring the division meets state and federal requirements by monitoring transactions, preparing corrections, supporting audits, and maintaining organized, audit-ready records.
Working closely with program managers, administrative staff, and Accountant 4s, you will serve as a technical resource for accounting processes, projections, and financial systems—helping sustain the division’s financial health and its ability to deliver critical public services.
Key responsibilities include:- Conduct monthly reconciliations of expenditures, revenues, encumbrances, and fund balances across general funds, program receipts, federal awards, and reimbursable agreements.
- Research discrepancies in financial data, prepare journal vouchers to correct coding or fund source errors, and maintain accurate financial spreadsheets and documentation.
- Manage grant accounting activities, including drawdown tracking, match monitoring, eligibility verification, quarterly and annual reporting, and coordinating closeout documentation.
- Support financial analysis by preparing financial reports, entering actuals into forecasting models, developing variance analyses, and assisting with spending plan updates.
- Prepare and submit federal billing documentation and refunds, ensuring accuracy and compliance with required standards and timelines.
- Maintain audit-ready files, respond to fiscal data inquiries, and support corrective actions and process improvements that strengthen internal controls.
- Provide technical accounting assistance to program staff, participate in cross-training efforts, and support special projects—including fee studies, emergency fiscal operations, and modernization initiatives.

We are looking for a candidate that has experience in the following areas:

- Financial Analysis: Knowledge of the principles, methods, and techniques of financial analysis, forecasting, and modeling to interpret quantitative and qualitative data; includes data modeling, earned value management, and evaluating key financial indicators, trends, and historical data.
- Accounting Operations: Knowledge of general ledger accounting and the control/subsidiary account relationships and reconciliation techniques, including accounts receivable, accounts payable, and disbursing officer's accountability

Qualifications

- Three (3) professional references who you have worked with on a daily basis, including two (2) current or former supervisors, along with their daytime contact phone numbers.
- A copy of academic transcripts (unofficial are okay, please ensure the institution name/URL is listed on the transcripts) to verify education.
- Copies of your two (2) most recent performance evaluations. A supervisor letter of recommendation may be used as a substitute for each evaluation that is unavailable.
