The Department of Corrections (DOC) is seeking an Accountant 1 to provide general oversight of the Inmate General Welfare Fund (IGWF) for State Correctional Institution (SCI) at Mahanoy and Frackville. Requirements
As an Accountant 1 for the Department of Corrections, you will manage the daily operations of the Inmate Accounting Section within the Institutional Business Office.
Work involves recording, classifying, analyzing, and reporting of financial statements and transactions for the Inmate General Welfare Fund (IGWF), fixed assets accounting, preparation of insurance claims, and other related specialized accounting projects.
You will also have the opportunity to supervise and train subordinate staff responsible for maintaining the IGWF, which includes all financial transactions for inmates. Key responsibilities include:
- Maintaining general ledger to account for inmate accounts, revenue producing functions, and annual budget purchases
- Investigating discrepancies
- Recommending changes to refine and improve reporting
- Reviewing and approving purchase requests
- Researching and responding to inmate grievances
- Providing general oversight of the inmate cable television system

Work Schedule and Additional Information:
- Full-time employment
- Work hours are 8:00 AM to 4:00 PM, Monday - Friday, with a 30-minute lunch.
- Telework: You will not have the option to telework in this position.

Qualifications
QUALIFICATIONS
Minimum Experience and Training Requirements:
- Successful completion of the Commonwealth's Accounting Intern Program (Commonwealth job title or equivalent Federal Government job title, as determined by the Office of Administration); or
- One year as a Financial Programs Trainee (Commonwealth job title or equivalent Federal Government job title, as determined by the Office of Administration); or
- One year as a Fiscal Technician (Commonwealth job title or equivalent Federal Government job title, as determined by the Office of Administration), and fifteen college credits in accounting; or
- Five years of Bookkeeping experience and fifteen college credits in accounting; or
- A Bachelor's Degree including or supplemented by fifteen credits in accounting.
- Applicants will be considered to have met the educational requirements once they are within 3 months of graduating with a qualifying degree.
Other Requirements:
- Successful completion of basic training in Elizabethtown, PA is required.
