Summary

This job involves helping college students who are struggling academically by offering one-on-one coaching, creating personalized success plans, and running workshops to boost their performance and keep them in school.

Full Job Description

Reporting to the Director of the Academic Success Center (ASC), the Academic Coach provides direct support to students as a means to improve academic performance and retention.

Manages outreach and support services for students on academic probation in collaboration with student services offices across campus.
  • Offers individualized academic coaching.
  • Develops and facilitates Serious About Success seminars.
  • Coordinates with academic colleges on support and outreach.
  • Communicates with advisors and faculty regarding student progress.
  • Tracks student participation in success initiatives.
  • Connects with probation students to create success plans and provide general support.
  • Meets with students each semester for interim grade consultations.
  • Supervises, trains and hires student peer academic coaches.
  • Teaches a LEAD course to train and support ASC peer coaches.
  • Manages and implements curriculum updates for LEAD, including incorporating relevant coaching strategies along with trends related to academic student success.
  • Supervises interns through the Master of Social Work program to better support students in the ASC.
  • Compiles probation data and provides information for ASC annual report.

Provides outreach to academically vulnerable students referred to the ASC by faculty and staff.
  • Works with individual students to identify academic and non-academic barriers to success and appropriate solutions and resources for support.
  • Connects with referred students to create success plans and provides general case management support.
  • Collaborates with faculty and administrative offices, including Records and Registration, Student Services, Financial Aid, Health and Counseling, Residence Life, and the Dean of Students, to provide holistic student support.
  • Collaborates with campus departments/offices as necessary to develop and refine protocols for identifying academically vulnerable students.
  • Provides timely feedback to faculty on the status of their referrals.
  • Tracks data of student referrals for reporting purposes.

Directs the Academic Action Plan (AAP) process and reports data to Financial Aid.
  • Meets with students submitting Financial Aid appeals to create AAPs.
  • Tracks student compliance with AAP requirements.
  • Meets with all students with AAPs at the midpoint of each semester to review interim grades.
  • Coordinates with other ASC staff to ensure adequate support for students with AAPs and timely reporting to Financial Aid.

Develops and delivers collaborative student success programming, promotes academic support services through targeted outreach and communications, and leads study hall initiatives to enhance student academic achievement.
  • Develops and facilitates student success workshops both independently and in collaboration with faculty, academic colleges, departments and campus organizations (e.g., LEAP, TRiO).
  • Designs and implements promotional materials and outreach strategies for ASC programs, including web content, email communications and social media campaigns.
  • Coordinates and leads study hall sessions as needed to support student academic achievement.

Requirements

  • Master’s degree in higher education, counseling, or related field and at least one year of experience providing counseling, academic coaching, advising, or academic support outreach to academically vulnerable students.
  • Knowledge of higher education academic programs.
  • Comprehensive understanding of holistic student development and the interconnection of academic and non-academic concerns impacting student success and retention.
  • Excellent teaching, facilitating, advising, presentation and counseling skills.
  • Excellent interpersonal, listening and problem-solving skills.
  • Effective oral and written communication skills.
  • Ability to effectively manage multiple priorities and provide exceptional customer service in a dynamic, fast-paced environment.
  • Ability to establish and maintain effective working relationships with faculty and staff across campus.
  • Demonstrated ability to support the academic success of diverse student populations.
  • Ability to effectively develop and deliver academic support programming and study skills workshops for diverse learners.
  • Sufficient technical ability to master software/applications required to perform job duties at a high level.

Qualifications

  • Experience supporting the academic success of online learners.
  • Proficiency with Microsoft Office and familiarity with student information systems (e.g., Banner).
  • Proficiency with Qualtrics, Maxient, and Blackboard helpful.
