The Alaska Department of Fish and Game, Division of Wildlife Conservation is recruiting

for a Wildlife Biologist 2/3 (Endangered Species Biologist) located in Juneau, Alaska!


What You Will Be Doing:

The position will provide expert scientific and policy information and review for federal Endangered Species Act (ESA) issues, including but not limited to:

  • Work with ADF&G staff (including those that specialize in marine mammals, waterfowl, shorebirds, land birds, small mammals, wood bison, and sport and commercial fisheries) to evaluate and respond to federal pre-listing decisions, listing petitions, and proposed federal rules, as well as revisions of the State Wildlife Action Plan, species’ recovery plans, and other conservation planning efforts.
  • Contribute to and evaluate federal and state environmental reviews, including gathering and summarizing scientific comments on project impacts to listed species.
  • Coordinate and enhance conservation efforts for T&E species throughout Alaska.
  • Collaborate with ADF&G staff to develop partnerships, implement conservation strategies, and focus program efforts on high-priority species and habitats.
  • Work cooperatively with other state, federal, university, and non-profit organizations engaged in wildlife conservation activities and issues within the state.

The Working Environment You Can Expect:

This position is based in Juneau and is primarily office-based with the opportunity for an independent research project, if desired.

Who We Are Looking For:

We are looking for a dynamic and motivated wildlife professional to participate as part of the state’s endangered species research and response team.

The successful candidate will be an enthusiastic, thoughtful, and self-motivated biologist able to critically evaluate scientific information, ask insightful questions, follow protocols, creatively solve problems, and work independently as well as part of a team.


Knowledge, skills and abilities:

  1. Experience working with or implementing the federal Endangered Species Act, especially experience related to sections 4, 6, 7 and 10 of the Act.
  2. Experience with technical and professional scientific writing that demonstrates your ability to write clearly, including your experience with preparation of issue papers and publishing research results.
  3. Skill in evaluating and using scientific information to inform policy and management decisions.
  4. Experience developing and implementing species risk assessments, conservation plans, recovery plans, best management guidelines, or regulations to conserve wildlife and habitat.
  5. Skill in interacting with the public and giving scientific and other public presentations, as well as verbal and written briefings for policy and decision makers, especially on controversial issues.
  6. Experience collaborating with multiple agencies or organizations that demonstrates strong interpersonal communication skills, with the ability to work effectively and respectfully with others from varying backgrounds and with different perspectives and abilities.
  7. Experience as a wildlife biologist, designing and performing research projects that include hypothesis testing, and population monitoring on a diversity of bird and mammal species.

    Specifically identify wildlife research work experience with candidate, threatened, and endangered species; non-hunted species; and hunted/game species.

Wildlife Biologist 2

A bachelor’s degree from an accredited college in biology, a branch of biology, limnology, biometrics, oceanography, forestry, or natural resource management.ANDOne year of professional level biologist experience.

The required professional biologist experience is met by service as a Wildlife Biologist 1, Fishery Biologist 1, or Habitat Biologist 1 with the State of Alaska or the equivalent with another employer.

Substitutions:
A bachelor’s degree from an accredited college that includes or is supplemented by the following credit hours will substitute for the degree in a specific field:
• at least 24 semester hours (36 quarter hours) in biology, a branch of biology, limnology, biometrics, oceanography, forestry, or natural resource management (excluding courses that focus on agricultural husbandry techniques, human population dynamics, or the design and manipulation of landscapes), of which 16 semester hours (24 quarter hours) are upper division courses; and
• at least 12 semester hours (16 quarter hours) in any combination of two or more of the following: chemistry, physics, mathematics, statistics, geology, hydrology, or GIS.

A master's degree from an accredited college in biology, a branch of biology, limnology, biometrics, oceanography, forestry or natural resource management, will substitute for the required year of professional level biologist experience.

Special Note: “Upper division courses” means courses that are specialized, in-depth and advanced.

Such courses emphasize problem-solving, analytical thinking skills, and theoretical applications, with depth and rigor in a discipline’s theories and methods; specialization in a particular field or profession; refinement of general education; and/or development of specific intellectual and professional skills.

Upper division courses are commonly identified in college catalogs as 300 level and higher.Some positions may require training in specialized areas such as hydroacoustics, microscopic analysis, underwater research, or fish habitat restoration or enhancement.


Wildlife Biologist 3
A bachelor’s degree from an accredited college in biology, a branch of biology, limnology, biometrics, oceanography, forestry, or natural resource management;
AND
One year of full performance professional level biologist experience. The required professional biologist work experience is met by service as a Fishery Biologist 2, Wildlife Biologist 2, Habitat Biologist 2, or Fisheries Geneticist 1 with the State of Alaska or the equivalent with another employer.

Substitution:
A bachelor’s degree from an accredited college that includes or is supplemented by the following credit hours will substitute for the degree in a specific field:
