Job Description

Summary

This job involves leading field surveys of streams in Southeast Alaska to document fish habitats and update a catalog of important waterways, while also helping with monitoring projects and setting up remote camps.

It's a temporary role lasting about six months, with possible extension, that requires travel to rugged areas and working long hours outdoors.

A good fit would be someone adventurous and physically fit who enjoys nature, has experience in wildlife fieldwork, and can work independently or lead small teams in challenging environments.

The Alaska Department of Fish and Game, Division of Habitat is recruiting

for a Fish and Wildlife Technician 4 located in Douglas, Alaska!


What You Will Be Doing:

This dynamic, long term nonpermanent position (6 months with a potential for extension) in the Region 1 Douglas office is responsible for fulfilling the Habitat Section’s mission to ensure the protection of the state’s biological resources by contributing to the expansion of the Alaska Department of Fish and Game anadromous waters catalog.

Duties include leading stream surveys and documenting anadromous fish and fish habitat; establishing and maintaining a field camp; compiling field data; preparing nominations for the anadromous waters catalog; issuing trip reports documenting field work; and assisting with aquatic biomonitoring projects in the field and laboratory.

At times, this position will lead a lower-level technician while doing surveys throughout Southeast Alaska.

The incumbent will participate and occasionally lead field work to update the Alaska Department of Fish and Game’s anadromous waters catalog, which specifies anadromous water bodies in the state and establishes the State's fish habitat permit authority.

The incumbent also assist with monitoring projects, including aquatic biomonitoring and working at active construction sites to remove and exclude fish from in-water work areas.

Field work requires working long hours and remote and rural travel up to two weeks, including overtime pay.


The Working Environment You Can Expect:

The incumbent will travel to remote areas throughout Southeast Alaska to conduct field work in the backcountry, tent camping for up to two weeks at a time, and in Petersburg, Ketchikan, Prince of Wales Island, and Juneau areas; housing and food will be provided while traveling.

The Habitat Section Region I office is located in Douglas, across Gastineau Channel from downtown Juneau, where the incumbent will work when not in the field, which offers access to abundant outdoor adventures and wilderness to explore in the Tongass National Forest.

  • The successful candidate will be required to safely and effectively complete rigorous field work in rough and uneven terrain, wading rivers and streams, with potential for wildlife encounters. Travel usually includes working long days (up to 15 hours) and seasonally week-long trips.
  • Required training, which may be completed on the job, includes ADF&G’s Firearms and Wildlife Safety, Wilderness First Aid, CPR and AED, and Occupational Safety and Health Administration training for working in the Douglas Island Building laboratory.

    Additional training opportunities may include: introduction to ArcPro software, remote worker swiftwater safety, and electrofishing techniques.


Who We Are Looking For:

We are interested in candidates who possess some or all of the following position specific competencies:

  • Field experience: the ideal candidate will have experience working in bear country, operating boats and ATVs, and ability to back country navigate in inclement weather.
  • The ideal candidate has knowledge of Southeast Alaska anadromous and resident fish species, fish habitat, and life history requirements; experience surveying anadromous water bodies in Alaska; ability to work independently and as part of a team; ability to develop and maintain positive working relationships; and independently provide quality products, meet deadlines, and effectively manage time.

Special Note:
A valid driver's license is required.

This position may be in possession of, or have access to, firearms/ammunition.

Requirements

High school graduation or the equivalent.
AND
One year of experience as a journey level fish and wildlife technician or aide. With the State of Alaska, this experience is equivalent to Fish and Wildlife Technician 3.
OR
Four years of technical laboratory and/or field experience involving fish or wildlife research, management, or habitat protection; as a commercial fisher, guide, or trapper; or a subsistence hunter or fisher.

Substitutions:
An additional six months of work experience involving fish, wildlife, outdoor manual labor, or in a laboratory may substitute for the high school graduation or equivalent.
Bachelor of Science degree in fisheries, wildlife or habitat protection may substitute for a maximum of two years of technical laboratory or field experience, involving fish or wildlife research, management, or habitat protection.

Special Requirements:
Work may involve exposure to animals, insects, inclement weather, low level flying, traveling by boat or skiff, or contact with drugs or chemicals. Housing may consist of bunkhouses, vessels, or wall tents. Positions are often full-time but may be seasonal or temporary.

Special Note:
"High school diploma equivalent" means one of the following: 1) a GED (general educational development); 2) completion of any basic adult education course equivalent to 480 class hours (16 weeks at 30 course hours per week); 3) acceptance in full standing by an accredited college or university; or 4) highest grade of school completed plus an amount of paid or volunteer experience that totals 12 years.

Fields of study comparable to fisheries, wildlife or habitat protection include aquaculture, biology, ichthyology, microbiology, ornithology, and zoology.
