Job Description

Summary

This job involves driving a vehicle to transport veterans living at the Washington Veterans Home to their medical appointments and back, while ensuring their safety and comfort during the trip.

You'll help residents get in and out of the vehicle, assist with wheelchairs or other mobility aids, and keep the vehicle clean.

Key Requirements

Truck Driver 1
Full-Time - Non-Perm

Our team is excited to announce a new opening for a Full-Time Truck Driver 1, project position here at the Washington Veterans Home (WVH), located in Port Orchard, Washington!

In this role, you will provide quality care and customer service to residents by transporting them to and from their medical appointments. Make a difference in Veterans' lives and apply today!

Please note: This is a non-perm role has an expected end date of more than 6 months. The expected shift for this position is 7:00 a.m. to 3:30 p.m., Monday through Friday. This position is not eligible for telework.

*This position has been posted within the assigned pay range through Step L. Step M has not been published as this is considered the longevity step, in alignment with state HR compensation rules.
Homes 24/7 facility differential: Updated as of July 1, 2025: This position is eligible for "Supplement Basic Shift Premium" for 24/7 Facilities. Employees who are assigned to a facility that provides direct care to residents, patients, and/or clients, and whose duties are required to be performed on location will receive an additional one dollar ($1.00) per hour of supplemental basic shift premium for each hour of basic shift premium. This shift premium does not apply to overtime hours. The supplemental basic shift premium shall expire on June 29, 2027.

As a Truck Driver 1 you will operate facilities transportation buses and vehicles to provide services for WVH residents and the transportation department.

Requirements

Some of what you'll do:
  • Drives and transports residents and personnel to and from required medical, dental, and various health related appointments.
  • Ensures residents stat seated during transportation and attend to their needs during transportation, loading, or unloading process.
  • Transfers residents safely to and from vehicles while in wheelchairs, Gerri chairs, and other various medical devices.
  • Assists the disabled as required by offering an arm, or pushing wheelchairs.
  • Communicates and interact frequently with residents, family members, supervisors, colleagues, coworkers, peers, professional medical care providers, and maintain professional and cooperative conduct.
  • Waits with residents to calm and comfort them during wait, and assists them to reschedule their appointments if necessary.
  • Immediately reports mechanical deficiencies to supervisor.
  • Maintains vehicles in a clean and sanitary condition.

Qualifications

Required:
  • Valid Washington State driver's license.
  • A record free from serious traffic violations.
  • Must be proficient in the English language.

Preferred/Desired:

  • HS Diploma or equivalent.
  • Possession of Class B commercial driver's license (CDL) with passenger endorsement.
  • Have excellent communication skills written and verbal.
  • Ability to lead and work directly with residents.
  • Ability to understand and apply rules and written / oral instructions.
  • Ability to prepare messages and simple reports.
  • Ability to maintain accurate records.
  • Able to read and understand written instructions, directions, and procedures.
  • Ability to make simple arithmetic calculations.
  • Ability to follow safety policies and procedures.

Special Requirements:
  • Must be able to pass criminal background check, prior to hire and every 2 years, in accordance with DVA Policy 615.000 Criminal History Background Checks.
  • Must comply with annual Tuberculin Screening in accordance with DVA policy 670.000 Tuberculosis Testing.
  • Requires medical evaluation, fit testing, training, and use of respiratory protection as required by the Washington Industrial Safety and Act standards. Must be able to wear a respirator, medical gloves, gowns, eye protection, and other personal protection as required by a job or task.
  • Must be able to lift up to 40 lbs.
  • Positions requiring travel must have a valid unrestricted driver's license and must be insured if driving a privately owned vehicle on state business.
  • Candidates who are offered a job with WDVA must possess work authorization which does not require sponsorship by the employer for a visa now or in the future.
