Support our veterans enrolled in the Medical Recuperative Care (MRC) contract at our Transitional Housing Program (THP) in Port Orchard, WA. Bring compassionate care to our nation's heroes! Our team is excited to announce we are now hiring for a Part-Time, Registered Nurse 2, for our MRC at the TPP in scenic Port Orchard, Washington!

In this role you will provide an essential service within the organization as the program manages 5 beds for clients who are often disabled and who are receiving medical care from the VA for chronic health care conditions. These clients are often considered both vulnerable and high-risk. This position provides education to MRC clients as well as participates in care planning and medication monitoring.

Please note: The work schedule for this position is 3 days a week, 12-15 hours per week during business hours. Schedule can be tailored to the availability of the candidate and program needs. Example schedule: 9:00 am to 2:00 pm. Monday, Tuesday, and Thursday. This position is not eligible for telework.

*This position has been posted within the assigned pay range through Step W. Step X has not been published as this is considered the longevity step, in alignment with state HR compensation rules.

Updated as of July 1, 2025: This position is eligible for "Supplement Basic Shift Premium" for 24/7 Facilities. Employees who are assigned to a facility that provides direct care to residents, patients, and/or clients and whose duties are required to be performed on location will receive an additional one dollar ($1.00) per hour of supplemental basic shift premium for each hour of basic shift premium. This shift premium does not apply to overtime hours. The supplemental basic shift premium shall expire on June 29, 2027.

These locations provide Medicare and Medicaid nursing home care to Veterans, including, in some instances, their spouses, widows, or Gold Star Families.

Requirements

Some of what you'll do:
  • Review discharge paperwork to include treatment plans, medication lists and diagnosis lists.
  • Work with VA Liaison and DVA MRC case manager to develop and implement care plan.
  • Participate in monthly case reviews.
  • Participate in ad-hoc case review meetings.
  • Immediately report significant changes in client status, medication intake or overall condition to VA Liaison and DVA MRC case manager.
  • Work with VA Liaison and DVA MRC case manager to modify care plan as needed based on client changes.
  • Submits required VA documentation to the VA Liaison.
  • Provides guidance to DVA MRC staff related to client medical needs which would impact case management.
  • Reviews discharge documentation for complete understanding of MRC client’s medication needs.
  • Review medication list with MRC client and provide education on medication types and administration.
  • Monitors MRC client’s medication intake.
  • Reviews care plan, diagnosis and medication lists directly with MRC client.
  • Provides general education related to care plan activities, to include medication administration.
  • Provides guidance on any necessary isolation protocols or special medication handling associated with client’s prescribed medications.
  • May demonstrate medication administration for new medications or modified medications for which the MRC client may not be familiar.
  • Provides education on prescribed medication for the client to include dosage and frequency review, pill organizer usage, proper medication storage, and medication administration techniques.
  • Provides demonstration to MRC clients on how to self-monitor and record vitals.
  • Demonstrates process for medication refills to MRC clients.
  • Assess clients to determine if emergency medical interventions are needed.

Qualifications

Required:
  • Valid Washington state registered nurse license or unencumbered registered nurse multistate licensure.
  • One ( 1 ) year experience with facilitating discharge plans and continuous care planning activities.
  • Must be proficient in the English language and be able to read, write and speak English.
Preferred/Desired:
  • Experience working with Veteran populations.
  • Experience with individuals experiencing homelessness with a broad understanding of the barriers individuals may face in obtaining permanent housing and potential solutions.
Special Requirements:

Must be able to pass a DSHS BCCU Background Check prior to beginning services and every two (2) years in accordance with WDVA Policy 615.000 Background Checks.

Information from the background check will not necessarily preclude employment but will be considered in determining the applicant's suitability and competence to perform in the position.

  • Must comply with annual Tuberculin Screening in accordance with DVA policy 670.000 Tuberculosis Testing.
  • Must be able to lift up to 60 lbs. and be capable of reaching a minimum of 36" using proper technique to stock shelves and access supplies. Employee must also be able to push or pull with sufficient strength and walk, sit, and bend in an unrestricted manner during the entire workday.
  • Requires medical evaluation, fit testing, training, and use of respiratory protection as required by the Washington Industrial Safety and Act standards. Must be able to wear a respirator, medical gloves, gowns, eye protection, and other personal protection as required by a job or task.
  • Must obtain and maintain a current CPR/BLS certification.
  • Must maintain a valid RN license.
  • Must maintain regular and reliable attendance and be willing to work as needed.
  • Must successfully complete, within mandated timeframes, employee orientation and all other mandatory annual, in-service, and other required training.
  • Must become familiar and comply with all DVA policies and procedures and Collective Bargaining Agreements as applicable.
  • Must sign the confidentiality statement for all employees.
  • Positions requiring travel must have a valid unrestricted driver's license and must be insured if driving a privately owned vehicle on state business.
  • Candidates who are offered a job with WDVA must possess work authorization which does not require sponsorship by the employer for a visa now or in the future.
