Maintenance Mechanic 1
Full-Time, Non-Permanent
Washington Veterans Home

We are hiring a Full-Time Maintenance Mechanic 1, in a Non-Permanent role to perform mechanical and facility repairs, grounds maintenance (to include lawn care, landscaping, and watering of grounds), carpentry and plumbing work, and more!

Please note: This position is expected to last less than 6 months.

Working knowledge of skills in fields such as electrical, plumbing, carpentry, welding, painting, and machinist work is preferred in applicants for the maintenance of our long-term care facility and grounds.

*This position has been posted within the assigned pay range through Step L. Step M has not been published as this is considered the longevity step, in alignment with state HR compensation rules.

Updated as of July 1, 2025: This position is eligible for "Supplement Basic Shift Premium" for 24/7 Facilities. Employees who are assigned to a facility that provides direct care to residents, patients, and/or clients and whose duties are required to be performed on location will receive an additional one dollar ($1.00) per hour of supplemental basic shift premium for each hour of basic shift premium. This shift premium does not apply to overtime hours. The supplemental basic shift premium shall expire on June 29, 2027.

In addition, we provide critical community services through a variety of programs, and at our four State Veterans Homes located in Orting, Port Orchard, Spokane, and Walla Walla. These locations provide Medicare and Medicaid nursing home care to Veterans, including, in some instances, their spouses, widows, or Gold Star Families.

Requirements

Some of what you'll do:
  • Perform maintenance, operation, and repair of electrical, mechanical and structural systems of buildings and utility distribution.
  • Operate hand tools, power tools, lawn mowers, and other equipment as needed.
  • Perform minor repairs on building fixtures, plumbing, heating, laundry, and kitchen equipment, motors, and electrical appliances.
  • Operate automotive equipment to transport materials and supplies.
  • Mow, irrigate, fertilize, and maintain lawns.
  • Use a variety of manual tools and equipment such as weed trimmers, backpack blowers, light tractors, and lawn mowers.
  • Plant, transplant, trim, and water plants, trees, flowers, and shrubs.
  • Other duties as assigned by the Plant Manager and Maintenance Mechanic 2 and 3.
  • Move furniture and equipment for various departments and physical plant shops.
  • Assist with phones, TVs, medical equipment, or other electronics as needed.

Qualifications

Required:
  • High school diploma or GED equivalent.
  • 2 years of general work experience in building and equipment maintenance, construction or repair work, or equivalent education/experience.
  • Must be proficient in the English language and be able to read, write, and speak English.
Preferred/Desired:
  • Ability to use appropriate tools.
  • Ability to read, understand, follow, and enforce safety procedures.
  • Ability to diagnose and repair structures in to maintain usability.
  • Ability to read commercial blueprints and apply building codes through the full range of commercial and industrial maintenance and construction work.
Special Requirements:

Must be able to pass a DSHS BCCU Background Check prior to beginning services and every two (2) years in accordance with WDVA Policy 615.000 Background Checks.

Information from the background check will not necessarily preclude employment but will be considered in determining the applicant's suitability and competence to perform in the position.

  • Must be able to perform moderately heavy physical effort for some tasks such as moving furniture, equipment, etc. Incumbent must be able to lift up to 60 lbs. and may push/pull/carry objects weighing over 60 lbs.
  • Must be able to perform physically demanding work with continuous standing and walking; frequent lifting, stooping, kneeling, reaching, pushing, pulling, twisting, and bending; repetitive motion of hands and arms and gripping with hands.
  • Must comply with annual Tuberculin Screening in accordance with DVA policy 670.000 Tuberculosis Testing.
  • Requires medical evaluation, fit testing, training, and use of respiratory protection as required by the Washington Industrial Safety and Act standards. Must be able to wear a respirator, medical gloves, gowns, eye protection, and other personal protection as required by a job or task.
  • Must successfully complete, within mandated timeframes, employee orientation and all other mandatory annual, in-service, and other required training.
  • Must become familiar and comply with all DVA policies and procedures and Collective Bargaining Agreements as applicable.
  • Must sign the confidentiality statement for all employees.
  • Must maintain regular and reliable attendance, successfully complete employee orientation and other required training.
  • Candidates who are offered a job with WDVA must possess work authorization which does not require sponsorship by the employer for a visa now or in the future.
