Wastewater Treatment Plant Operator 2

Full Time | Non-Permanent

Location: McNeil Island Stewardship | McNeil Island, WA

Salary Range: $6,356 - $7,740 Monthly


This non-position is represented by the Teamsters 117 bargaining unit.


Correctional Industries is dedicated to maintaining and expanding incarcerated work training programs that build marketable skills, foster strong work ethics, and reduce the overall tax burden of the Department of Corrections.

Through meaningful work and hands-on training, these programs support successful reentry while keeping critical facility operations running safely and efficiently.


Th Wastewater Treatment Plant Operator 2 is responsible for monitoring and maintaining the well system and water distribution system on McNeil Island while also providing support in the wastewater treatment area.

This role ensures that all water and wastewater operations meet federal and state regulatory requirements, including compliance with RCW, WAC, Department of Health and Department of Ecology standards, as well as applicable Department of Corrections policies.

Accuracy, attention to detail, and a strong commitment to safety and environmental stewardship are essential to this work.


In addition to system operations, this position plays a key role in training and supervising incarcerated workers in the maintenance of water equipment and related plant operations.

The candidate of choice will inspect the well house and water distribution systems, perform or recommend necessary maintenance, and ensure equipment is operating effectively.

Chemical testing is conducted in accordance with Department of Health requirements, with results analyzed and used to make appropriate operational adjustments.

As a Wastewater Treatment Plant Operator 2, some of your duties will include:

  • Monitoring well system, water tank and Distribution Network and / or Wastewater Treatment Plant which could look like:
    • Monitoring the well system and maintaining it at McNeil Island concurrent to the regulations and policy set by the Department of Health (DOH), Department of Ecology (DOE), Environmental Protection Agency (EPA) and the Department of Corrections
    • Monitoring and maintaining adequate quantity and quality of potable water to staff and residents on McNeil Island; ensure sufficient quantities of water are available for fire protection.

      Operates the plant per Department of Ecology (DOE), Department of Health (DOH), Environmental Protection Agency (EPA) and applicable Department of Corrections policies

    • Instructing and training
    • Chemical Testing
    • Other duties as assigned

Qualifications

What we need (required qualifications):

  • Valid Washington State Certificate of Competency issued by the Department of Health as a Water Treatment Plant Operator 1 or higher

AND

  • Valid Washington State Certificate of Competency issued by the Department of Health as a Water Distribution Manager 1 or higher

AND

  • Certification by Department of Ecology as a Group 2 Wastewater Treatment Plant Operator

AND

  • Valid Washington driver’s license

Telework Details

This position may be allocated for telework.

Work may be performed from your home or another offsite location within the state of Washington using a reliable internet or cellular hotspot service at that time.

Employees are expected to perform assigned duties in a safe manner, to take proper care all state-issued equipment, and maintain confidentiality of all information in possession while working offsite.

Employees will be required to commute to a Department of Corrections facility or field office as business requires, to potentially include components of the onboarding process.

Some offices will have a “drop in” area available, however, a dedicated workspace within a DOC facility will not be provided.
