This job involves managing and displaying historical artifacts and artworks in the Pentagon, including planning exhibits, conserving delicate items, and maintaining records for priceless Department of Defense collections.
A good fit would be someone with a background in art, design, or conservation who enjoys hands-on work with historical objects and leading projects in a museum-like setting.
It requires strong organizational skills and experience handling fragile items securely.
The position is located in the Graphics and Presentations Division (GPD), Executive Services Directorate, Washington Headquarters Services, located at the Pentagon.
The GPD manages the acquisition, storage, and display of loaned and agency-owned exhibits and works of art.
Most exhibits illustrate events and persons of great historical Department of Defense significance and contain artifacts of priceless monetary value.
These items are displayed in all areas of the Pentagon. In order to qualify for this position, you must meet the requirements described below.
The Visual Information Series, 1084, has an Individual Occupational Requirement (IOR) that must be met in addition to the specialized experience.
Basic Requirement: Education: Undergraduate and Graduate Education: Major study -- commercial art, fine arts, art history, industrial design, architecture, drafting, interior design, photography, visual communication, or other fields related to the position.
Some positions may also require subject-matter knowledge of medicine, science, or technical equipment.
Advanced training in a vocational school, technical institute, or art institute above the high school level in one of the fields listed above is creditable as general experience on a month-for-month basis.
Or Specialized Experience: Experience in the actual type of work for which application is made.
Unpaid experience is creditable, provided the work done was of a quality level and demonstrated the ability required for the position.
This includes planning the preparation and use of photographs, illustrations, drawings, and other artwork, charts, diagrams, dioramas, maps, slides, overlays, and other kinds of visual material for use in communicating information through visual means.
You may qualify at the GS-13 level, if you fulfill the following qualification requirement: One year of specialized experience equivalent to the GS-12 grade level in the Federal service (experience may have been gained in the private sector) that demonstrates your ability in: Applying conservation principles and lighting techniques to manage historical collections and plan exhibit layouts; and Designing or fabricating custom mounts, enclosures, or display solutions for fragile or uniquely shaped artifacts; and Managing a historical collection by accessioning new items, performing cyclical inventories, maintaining records in a collections management database, and preparing artifact condition reports; and Appling advanced conservation techniques for the secure handling, mounting, and display of delicate and irreplaceable historical objects; and Serving as a project lead or Contracting Officer's Representative (COR) for exhibit-related projects.
Experience refers to paid and unpaid experience, including volunteer work done through National Service programs (e.g., Peace Corps, AmeriCorps) and other organizations (e.g., professional; philanthropic; religious; spiritual; community, student, social).
You will receive credit for all qualifying experience, including volunteer experience.

Incumbent typical work assignments may include the following: Assists the GPD Division Chief, OSD Exhibits Program Manager, by providing guidance, technical expertise, and recommendations on OSD Exhibit Program's policies, goals, processes, and initiatives.
Assists in the placement of art objects in exhibit areas, the installation of major exhibitions and records movement of artwork and artifacts using an artwork tracking system.
Supports the GPD Division Chief on planning for and designing new exhibits and displays for the Pentagon Reservation.
Provides oversight and performs maintenance on all OSD-owned exhibits on the Pentagon Reservation.
