Job Description

Summary

This job is for a service manager at a school bus maintenance shop, where you'll oversee technicians, schedule repairs, conduct inspections, and ensure everything runs safely and efficiently.

It's ideal for someone with hands-on vehicle repair experience who enjoys leading a team and mentoring others to keep school buses in top condition.

You'll also handle some direct repairs and training to support the team's workload.

Full Job Description

The person in this position will schedule assigned work to shop technicians for timely completion of required maintenance tasks.

Monitor service center technician workloads and make recommendations concerning workloads to Operations Manager.

Conduct thirty day, six-week and annual vehicle inspections, assure that service center technicians correct inspection failures and file reports in accordance with state policies and guidelines.

Assure that all inspections, technician follow-up, and reports are complete, accurate, and timely.

Supervise service center technicians to assure that service center facilities, equipment and grounds are neat, clean, and free of potential safety and environmental violations.

Assure that the service center repair equipment is operational and ready for use by the service center technicians.

Report recommendations of needed equipment repairs and get repairs made in a complete, accurate, and timely manner.

Monitor the use of parts and supplies to assist the Parts Specialist in determining inventory level and immediate need of these parts and supplies for the preventive maintenance, general repair, and annual inspection programs.

Work with service center technicians to evaluate and identify training needs that will help the technicians maintain and update their mechanic skills.

Make recommendation to Operations Manager about how this training can be provided. Provide hands-on training and mentoring to technicians, as needed.

Supervise technicians to ensure that service technicians perform their job in compliance with Office of Transportation Weather, Safety, and Environmental policies and procedures using the Personal Protective Equipment as required.

Instruct new and existing bus drivers about their impact on overall school bus maintenance, providing information on the proper operation of the vehicle to reduce maintenance costs and the reduction of repairs associated with non-normal wear damage.

Provide hands-on technical assistance to help with excess maintenance work and fill in for service center technicians during absences or heavy workloads.

Provide other services in support of the school bus maintenance service center mission or the Office of Transportation mission as instructed by the Operations Manager.


This position is located in the Office of Transportation/Chester Bus Shop.

Requirements

Work experience involving the independent performance of job duties directly related to the area of employment.

Qualifications

High School diploma or equivalent and four (4) years of vehicle maintenance and repair experience in automotive or related repair; or any combination of training and experience that would enable an applicant to acquire the necessary knowledge, skills and abilities.

Required to lift objects weighing 50 pounds and to move objects weighing 125 pounds 30 feet. Must be able to operate power, hydraulic and electronic equipment.

Required to operate computer/printer equipment using Microsoft Office for Windows software.

Must possess or acquire within 120 calendar days a valid Class A or B CDL with Tank Vehicle, passenger and Air Brake endorsements, Tanker Operation certification, and criminal background check.

Successful candidates will be extended an offer of conditional probationary employment, at which time they will be required to submit to and pass a drug screening for illegal drugs and must pass the SDE/USDOT medical exam.
