Summary

This job involves maintaining and repairing state vehicles and equipment, such as trucks, mowers, and snow plows, by performing inspections, fixing mechanical and electrical issues, and handling field service calls.

Performs preventative maintenance inspection on state vehicles and equipment, following the recommended fluid levels, lubrication, fueling, brakes, exhaust system, and tire servicing policies, rules and regulations.

Reports major preventative servicing problems to Shop Foreman. Performs repairs on state vehicle and equipment and make daily entries on time sheet. Maintaining and repairing electrical systems.

Makes necessary repairs on hydraulic hoses, pump, motors and systems. Repairs and replaces starters, alternators and carburetors. Make repairs to mowers to include hydraulic systems.

Repairs and replaces controls as needed. Reports major problems to Shop Foreman. Maintains accurate records in the use of materials and parts according to state guidelines.

Keep parts and equipment clean and organized. Utilizes proper welding techniques in order to assist skilled mechanics in the repair and upgrade of equipment by fabricating and welding parts.

Install and repair inclement weather equipment such as snow plows and sand/salt spreaders. Ensure proper time sis charged to appropriate job tasks performed on equipment.

Responds to service calls in the field to tractor mowers, dump trucks and other vehicles and equipment. Determine the severity of the problem and make necessary repairs.

Enters data into logs for fuel consumption, engine hours, repairs and supplies/parts used.

Performs job in compliance with Safety and Environmental Policy and Procedures, using the available PPE as required. Assists with emergency operations during inclement weather.

May be required to work extended hours such as 12-hour shifts. Performs other related duties as assigned.

Requirements

Six (6) months of work experience that is directly related to the area of employment; or an approved acceptable equivalence.

Completion of one (1) academic year of a South Carolina High School Automotive Technology or Diesel Engine curriculum may substitute for six (6) months of directly-related experience.

Necessary Special Requirement: A valid motor vehicle operator’s license is required.

Requires attainment of a Class A Commercial Driver's License (CDL) within six (6) months of placement in the position.


The physical demands for the essential functions of this position involve bending, stooping, reaching, twisting, climbing, balancing, kneeling, pushing, pulling, grasping and physically manipulating objects of varying size, shape, weight, and material.

Must be able to lift up to 50 lbs. This position requires working in a large garage setting and may perform duties in an uncomfortable position for long periods of time.

May be required to work outside of normal work schedule, especially during inclement weather and/or other departmental-related emergencies.

Frequently exposed to outside environment in all weather conditions, noise, and oil or grease on a daily basis.
