DESCRIPTION OF DUTIES/ESSENTIAL FUNCTION- Performs skilled mechanical duties in the maintenance of water systems and facilities.
- Performs inspections, preventive maintenance, lubrications and repairs of buildings, plants, lift stations, pumps, motors, blowers, compressors, valves, lines and other water systems, facilities and equipment.
- Maintains and repairs equipment and tools used to perform responsibilities.
- Collects and catalogs data on installed equipment.
- Reports unsafe conditions and equipment to proper authorities.
- Keep records of maintenance and repair work.
- Will be required to drive to drive a city vehicle and maintain vehicle maintenance and mileage records.
WORKING CONDITIONSThis position involves considerable physical exertion, such as regular climbing of ladders, lifting heavy objects (up to 80 pounds) on a frequent basis and/or assuming awkward position for long periods of time. There are frequent exposures to extreme levels of temperature, air pollution, noise pollution, chemical gases, and substances.
This is a Department of Houston Public Works Emergency Management Position at the Tier I Level.
Requirements
EDUCATIONAL REQUIREMENTS Requires a high school diploma or GED certification. May require vocational competence in the operation of mechanical or electronic equipment.
EXPERIENCE REQUIREMENTSOne year of experience as a Houston Water Operations Technician Trainee or 18 months of experience in building or mechanical maintenance is/are required.
One year of directly related college or vocational education may be substituted for up to a maximum of one year of work experience.
LICENSE REQUIREMENTSA valid Driver License and compliance with the City of Houston's policy on driving (AP 2-2).
Qualifications
Preference will be given to applicants with training and experience in the maintenance field.
**Preference shall be given to eligible veteran applicants provided such persons possess the qualifications necessary for competent discharge of the duties involved in the position applied for, such persons are among the most qualified candidates for the position, and all other factors in accordance with Executive Order 1-6.**
