Full Job Description

The City of Norfolk's Department of Utilities is seeking qualified candidates for the position of Utility Maintenance Mechanic II. This person performs preventive maintenance on heavy machinery and equipment. Performs troubleshooting functions. Performs repairs. Performs analysis of equipment. Maintains records and reports. Manages plant operations.

Requirements

Essential functions include but are not limited to:

Performs overhauls, replacement, reading, maintenance and annual testing of all large water meters in the City's water system.Connects and disconnects water service; removes and resets water meters; repairs valves, taps, meter boxes, connection lines, flow rates and other system equipment.

Repairs leaks, failures and major system disruptions.Performs preventive maintenance on heavy machinery and equipment by inspecting large meter equipment, valves and boxes, checking meters for wear, leaks and damage, changing electrical and electronic gauges and switches.Performs troubleshooting functions by determining and solving reasons for non registering meters or leaks at meter sites.Performs repairs by overhauling, removing and replacing worn or damaged parts on meter equipment and installing new equipment, repairing water service and distribution lines.Performs analysis of equipment by conducting electronic search for meters and valves, performing water tap analysis and pressure test, keeping and preparing computerized and written reports on master meter replacements.Test all repairable meters 5/8" to 10"Maintains records and reports by accurately documenting work performed, meter removal, repair and maintenance and installation on work orders.Maintains accurate records and prepare weekly, daily and monthly reports on equipment and activities using software programs.Monitors, track and supply materials for meter replacement program and meter maintenance.Track and monitor meter inventory.Provide reporting for meter testing and inventory.Monitor vehicle usage and adhere to scheduled preventive maintenance schedule.Performs routine safety inspections on large equipment, vehicles and master meter locations.Responds to customer complaints by answering questions about services, checking meters for verification and repairing and explaining any problems.Assists with special projects and requests involving water meters as needed.Climbs ladders and stairs; bends, pushes, pulls, stoops and lifts over 60 lbs.; works in limited access and confined space areas; wears protective safety equipment.Must be able to read technical manuals, water service blueprints, fill out paperwork associated with large meters, and troubleshoot problems in the field.

Qualifications Work requires knowledge necessary to understand basic operational, technical, or office processes.

Level of knowledge equivalent to four years of high school or equivalency.One year experience in machinery repair and operation.The desired candidate will have two years or more of experience in machinery repair and operation.

Additional Information Valid Driver's License.May require the ability to receive and maintain access to perform duties on military bases, depending on assignment.Work Hours: Monday - Friday; 7:00 a.m.
