Upward Bound Tutor - Temporary Summer Position

The Department of Education & Early Learning’s (DEEL) mission is to ensure that all Seattle children have the greatest opportunity to succeed in school and in life, ultimately helping scholars graduate from school, ready for college, and a career.

As part of this mission, DEEL is hosting the Upward Bound program. Upward Bound provides fundamental support to participants in their preparation for college entrance and graduation.

The program provides opportunities for participants to succeed in their pre-college performance and ultimately in their higher education pursuits.

Upward Bound serves high school students from low-income families in which neither parent holds a bachelor's degree.

The goal of Upward Bound is to prepare students for the next academic year and increase the rate at which participants complete secondary education and enroll in and graduate from institutions of postsecondary education.

We are looking for a part-time tutor, math or English or science or foreign language to support the Upward Bound Program Program in-person at the Seattle University campus. Some remote training may be held remotely or in the Seattle Municipal Tower.

In this role, you will be responsible for mentoring, tutoring, and providing instructional aid to support 9th - 12th grade students.

You will work with the Academic Youth Counselor, mentoring students facing educational barriers to progress through the academic pathway so they may succeed in high school and beyond.

This position will provide you with the opportunity to build leadership skills and gain experience in working with diverse youth from underserved communities.

Requirements

Here's what you’ll be doing to support the Upward Bound program:

• Providing one-to-one or small group tutoring, remotely or in-person to 9th-12th grade students in humanities (writing, reading, social studies).
• Supporting leadership development, college and career readiness, goal setting, career exploration and life skills by developing and conducting workshops remotely or in person.
• Maintaining accurate records of tutoring and workshop activities by students and volunteers.

Qualifications

You will be most successful in this role with a combination of the following:

Experience:

• Proficiency in humanities, English (reading and writing), or social studies.
• Experience as a successful Upward Bound program participant or participant in a similar program that understands and can support students in developing the skills and knowledge for success in achieving personal, postsecondary, and career goals.
• Experience in developing workshops that will support students in gaining academic and life skills to succeed in high school, transition to postsecondary, graduate from college, and transition into a career.

Skills and Abilities:

• Responsible
• Strong interpersonal and problem-solving skills
• Ability to work with minimal supervision

In addition to the qualities mentioned above, you will need to possess the below required qualifications (or a combination of education, training or experience which provides an equivalent background required to perform the work of the class):

• An Associate’s Degree or two years of college-level coursework in Education or a closely related field.

Additional Information

This temporary non-benefits eligible position is eligible for overtime and classified as a Youth Supervisor 1 and will be starting on 5/20/26 and ending on 8/11/26.

The full pay rate for this position is $24.87 - $24.87 per hour. Employees will be given premium pay in lieu of benefits.

The Upward Bound program will take place in person at Garfield and Rainier Beach High Schools, and occasionally online. The tutor is expected to work Monday through Friday, 8:00 a.m.

– 3:00 p.m., in person at the Seattle University campus. Some remote training may be held remotely or in the Seattle Municipal Tower.

Individuals selected to fill these temporary positions may be eligible to receive Language Premium Pay (SMC 4.20.360), which provides a $200.00 monthly stipend to qualified bilingual employees who are properly evaluated and assigned to provide direct communication in-language, interpretation, or translation services to the public on behalf of the City of Seattle.
