About the Position: This position is located at Defense Health Network Pacific Rim, San Diego, CA Directorate of RM Financial Management.

Incumbent is delegated authority for certifying, approving, and disposition of the Medical Services Account, Third Party Collection and Medical Affirmative Claims, Elective Cosmetic Surgery and Inter-Agency Billing programs records and associated procedures.

Experience refers to paid and unpaid experience, including volunteer work done through National Service programs (e.g., Peace Corps, AmeriCorps) and other organizations (e.g., professional; philanthropic; religious; spiritual; community; student; social).

You will receive credit for all qualifying experience, including volunteer experience.

Specialized Experience for GS-09: One year of specialized experience which includes evaluating financial or billing accounts to identify sources of discrepancies and reviewing insurance bills or medical claims to ensure collections meet compliance with insurance contracts.

This definition of specialized experience is typical of work performed at the second lower grade/level position in the federal service (GS-07).

OR Education: Master's or equivalent graduate degree, two full years of progressively higher-level graduate education leading to such a degree, or LL.B or J.D.

in a field which demonstrates the knowledge, skills, and abilities necessary to do the work of the position, such as: business, accounting, or finance.

OR Combination of Education and Experience: A combination of education and experience may be used to qualify for this position as long as the computed percentage of the requirements is at least 100%.

To compute the percentage of the requirements, divide your total months of experience by 12.

Then divide the total number of completed graduate semester hours (or equivalent) beyond the first year (total graduate semester hours minus 18) by 18. Add the two percentages. Major Duties:

  • Analyzes and performs work necessary to accomplish work processes by using numerous manual and automation systems and software programs necessary for billing operations.
  • Compares account balances in various financial and billing information systems with related data to assure agreement.
  • Classify transactions, determine amounts owed, collect monies due, make deposits, complete a wide variety of accounting transactions.
  • Balances cash daily, accounts monthly, and validates ledgers monthly to ensure that accounts are closed out and balanced.
  • Research patient records, reconstruct incorrect or missing medical information required to prepare a valid insurance bill.
  • Resolves issues related to improperly coded or formatted bills, claim appeals and denials.
