Are you ready to join the Iowa Department of Natural Resources in our mission to conserve and enhance Iowa’s natural resources? We are seeking a dedicated Underground Storage Tank (UST) Specialist to provide critical oversight and technical expertise to the State of Iowa.


In this vital role, you will lead efforts in the assessment and remediation of leaking UST sites while proactively preventing future environmental hazards. By ensuring rigorous regulatory compliance across all operating facilities, you will help protect Iowa’s water and soil for future generations.

The Underground Storage Tank Specialist primary responsibilities include:

  • Review and analyze Leaking Underground Storage Tank (LUST) risk-based corrective action reports and Corrective Action Design Reports (CADRs) for regulatory compliance and technical completeness.
  • Manage formal correspondence regarding site assessments, establishing clear timelines for remediation and follow-up.
  • Partner with stakeholders (consultants, owners, and funding agencies) to drive corrective actions and mitigate high-risk environmental conditions.
  • Perform technical reviews of UST Closure Reports to ensure all regulatory requirements are satisfied.
  • Facilitate legal referrals and recommendations for permanent closure in cases of non-compliance.
  • Oversee third-party inspectors, ensuring the quality and accuracy of compliance reports and the timely reporting of releases.
  • Administer the inspection schedule to maintain a two-year frequency for all active UST sites.
  • Maintain rigorous tracking of all project submittals, including financial responsibility (FR) documents and monitoring reports.

  • Interpret and disseminate information regarding federal and state regulations, standards, and departmental policies.
  • Manage and track project submittals, ensuring timely and appropriate administrative responses.
  • Communicate concisely through both oral and written mediums to technical and non-technical stakeholders.
  • Utilize advanced software and databases to conduct research, develop spreadsheets, and analyze environmental data.
  • Formulate professional recommendations based on the rigorous interpretation of site-specific information.
  • Represent the DNR at public and professional forums throughout the state.
  • Demonstrate a commitment to customer service, team collaboration, and the highest standards of ethical conduct.
  • Execute tasks independently, maintaining consistent productivity and self-directed oversight.

The starting salary for new state (Executive Branch) employees is expected to be at the base of the pay range.

Additional salary increases may occur after the first six months, and then annually (if applicable).

Qualifications

Graduation from an accredited college or university with a Bachelor's Degree in natural science

OR

an equivalent combination of experience and education substituting one year of full-time professional work in an environmental, radiation control, environmental health or food sanitation program for each year (30 semester hours) of the required education.
