The Michigan Department of Transportation (MDOT) is offering a unique opportunity for you to gain hands-on experience and valuable skills through the MDOT Transportation Career Pathways Program.

Whether you're a recent high school graduate or considering a career change, if you are looking to get into the transportation industry, this program is for you!

This exciting program runs from May through September and is limited to 832 hours per appointment. Here's what you can expect:

  • Explore different career paths: Choose your track based on your interests, including Transportation Technician, Transportation Maintenance Worker, or Skilled Trades- not all regions have the same tracks.
  • Learn from experienced professionals: Gain valuable mentorship and insights into the transportation industry.
  • Develop essential skills: Build teamwork, communication, problem-solving, and technical skills that will benefit you throughout your career.
  • Make a difference in your community: Contribute to important projects that keep Michigan moving safely and efficiently.

In the Bay Region we are offering the following tracks: Transportation Maintenance Worker (TMW) Track Engage in hands-on work related to the upkeep and maintenance of transportation infrastructure.

From roadways to bridges, you'll play a crucial role in ensuring safe and efficient travel within our region.


Trades (Heavy Equipment Mechanic) Track For those exploring various aspects of the transportation industry, this track offers hands-on work related to trade-helper duties.

Learn from electricians, maintenance mechanics, and heavy equipment mechanics to discover your specific interest within the diverse field of transportation.

Program Requirements:

  • Attach a detailed resume
  • Pass a pre-employment drug test
  • Must be at least 18 years old and possess a valid driver's license by program start date 5/10/2026
  • 40-hour work week availability
  • Ability to work outside and move up to 45 pounds
  • Ability to work on roadsides and uneven terrain
  • Ability to follow and comply with instructions
