Job Description

Summary

This job involves maintaining roads, highways, and related infrastructure for the State of Michigan's transportation department, including operating heavy equipment and working in outdoor crews across assigned areas.

Workers handle tasks like repairing pavements, clearing roadside areas, and ensuring safe travel conditions, often requiring travel and flexibility in assignments.

It's a good fit for hands-on individuals who enjoy physical outdoor work, have basic mechanical skills, and are willing to get a commercial driver's license.

Key Requirements

  • High school diploma or equivalent education
  • Possession of a Commercial Learner’s Permit (CLP) at hire; must obtain CDL Group A with N or X endorsement within 12 months
  • No experience required for entry-level (Recruit) positions
  • One year of relevant experience (e.g., roadway, roadside, bridge, sign maintenance, or pavement marking) for level 7
  • Two years of experience, including one year at level 7, or one year of skilled trades at E9 level for E8
  • Ability to operate vehicles/trailers with GVWR of 26,001 pounds or more
  • Willingness to travel with crews, work region-wide on temporary assignments, and participate in work element system

Full Job Description



This position performs maintenance of state trunklines within the right-of-way for an assigned maintenance garage geographic area. This position may be trained to operate any piece of equipment or operation done in a typical maintenance garage. The major operations or equipment used is listed in the following duties. This position is required to participate in the work element system and travel with crews in assigned geographic areas of the garage. This position may be required to work region wide while on temporary assignment to the Region Maintenance facility or a traveling Crew. This position operates a vehicle or vehicle/trailer combination with a Gross Vehicle Weight Rating (GVWR) of 26,001 pounds or more when performing maintenance activities.

The "Salary" listed above is a range that reflects the minimum rate at the entry (8) level through the maximum rate at the experienced (E8) level. Based on education and experience, candidates will be reviewed to determine what level they are qualified for.

One year of experience equivalent to a Transportation Maintenance Worker 6 or Laborer E6 with experience in roadway, roadside, bridge, or sign maintenance, or pavement marking.

Transportation Maintenance Worker E8

Two years of experience equivalent to a Transportation Maintenance Worker, including one year equivalent to a Transportation Maintenance Worker 7; or, one year of skilled trades experience at the E9 level.

Additional Information

Transportation Maintenance Worker 6 (Recruit)

Possession of a Commercial Learner’s Permit at the time of hire. Continuing employment requires possession of a CDL Group A with N or X endorsement and no air break restrictions which must be obtained within twelve months from the date of hire.

Transportation Maintenance Worker 6, 7, E8

Must possess a CDL at the time of hire. 

Transportation Maintenance Worker E8

The MDOT Statewide Work Element Coordinator must approve satisfactory completion of the MDOT TMW Work Element training and certification program.
