This job involves hands-on maintenance work for Michigan's transportation system, including making and installing traffic signs, repairing bridges and culverts, caring for roadside plants and parks, and helping with electrical traffic devices.
In winter, it shifts to snow and ice removal on highways using heavy vehicles.
It's a good fit for someone who enjoys outdoor physical labor, has basic mechanical skills, and is comfortable operating large trucks in all weather.

This position performs region-wide sign shop activities such as fabrication, installation, and maintenance of traffic signs and special pavement marking.
Additionally, this position performs bridge/culvert maintenance activities involved in repairing substructure and superstructure of concrete and steel and maintenance on the twin 8000 ft. long, 150 ft.
high Zilwaukee Bridge.
Perform roadside activities including spraying pesticide, planting, trimming, and removal of trees and shrubs and performing maintenance activities at all roadside parks and rest areas and assisting Region Electricians in the maintenance and/or installation of energized traffic devices.
During the winter, duties will continue but may include working at one of the Bay Region highway maintenance garages performing snow/ice removal and related road maintenance.
Operate a vehicle or vehicle/trailer combination with a Gross Vehicle Weight Rating (GVWR) of 26,001 pounds or more (e.g., snowplow) when performing maintenance activities.
The "Salary" listed above is a range that reflects the minimum rate at the entry (6) level through the maximum rate at the experience (E8) level. Based on education and experience, candidates will be reviewed to determine what level they are qualified for.

Experience
Transportation Maintenance Worker 6
No specific type or amount of experience is required.
Transportation Maintenance Worker 7
One year of experience equivalent to a Transportation Maintenance Worker 6 or Laborer E6 with experience in roadway, roadside, bridge, or sign maintenance, or pavement marking.
Transportation Maintenance Worker E8
Two years of experience equivalent to a Transportation Maintenance Worker, including one year equivalent to a Transportation Maintenance Worker 7; or, one year of skilled trades experience at the E9 level.
To be considered for this position you must:
Transportation Maintenance Worker Recruit: Possess a Commercial Learner’s Permit upon appointment to the position.
Continuing employment requires possession of a Commercial Driver’s License (CDL) Group A with either an N or X endorsement and no air brake restrictions which must be obtained within 12 months of the date of hire into the position and must maintain throughout employment in the position.
Transportation Maintenance Worker 6, 7, E8: Possess a Commercial Driver’s License (CDL) at the time of appointment to the position.
Continuing employment requires possession of a CDL Group A with N or X endorsement and no air brake restrictions which must be obtained within 12 months from the date of hire into the position and maintained throughout employment in the position.
