This job involves hands-on maintenance of highways, bridges, signs, and roadside areas across Michigan's Bay Region, including tasks like repairing structures, planting vegetation, and clearing snow in winter.
Workers also help with electrical traffic devices and operate heavy vehicles for these duties.
It's a good fit for people who enjoy outdoor physical work, have some experience in maintenance or trades, and are comfortable with varying weather conditions and travel.

This position in the Bay Region Crews performs bridge/culvert maintenance activities involved in repairing substructure and superstructure of concrete and steel including activities performed on the twin 8000 foot long, 150 foot high Zilwaukee Bridge; region-wide sign shop activities such as fabrication, installation, and maintenance of traffic signs and special pavement marking; roadside activities including spraying pesticide, planting, trimming, and removal of trees and shrubs; and maintenance activities at all roadside parks and rest areas.
Additionally, this position assists Region Electricians in the maintenance and/or installation of energized traffic devices.
During the winter, duties will continue but may include working at one of the Bay Region highway maintenance garages performing snow/ice removal and related road maintenance.
Operate a vehicle or vehicle/trailer combination with a Gross Vehicle Weight Rating (GVWR) of 26,001 pounds or more (e.g., snowplow) when performing maintenance activities.
The "Salary" listed above is a range that reflects the minimum rate at the entry (6) level through the maximum rate at the experienced (E8) level. Based on education and experience, candidates will be reviewed to determine what level they are qualified for.

Experience
Transportation Maintenance Worker 6
No specific type or amount of experience is required.
Transportation Maintenance Worker 7
One year of experience equivalent to a Transportation Maintenance Worker 6 or Laborer E6 with experience in roadway, roadside, bridge, or sign maintenance, or pavement marking.
Transportation Maintenance Worker E8
Two years of experience equivalent to a Transportation Maintenance Worker, including one year equivalent to a Transportation Maintenance Worker 7; or, one year of skilled trades experience at the E9 level.
To be considered for this position you must:
Transportation Maintenance Worker 6, 7, E8: Possess a Commercial Driver’s License (CDL) at the time of appointment to the position.
Continuing employment requires possession of a CDL Group A with N or X endorsement and no air brake restrictions which must be obtained within 12 months from the date of hire into the position and maintained throughout employment in the position.
