This job involves maintaining roads, bridges, and roadside areas in Michigan's Upper Peninsula, including tasks like repairing surfaces, clearing debris, and handling snow removal in winter.
Workers operate heavy equipment such as dump trucks and snowplows, and may need to travel and work irregular shifts including nights and weekends.
It's a good fit for hands-on individuals who enjoy outdoor work, have some experience in maintenance or labor, and hold a commercial driver's license.

POSITION IS BEING FILLED THROUGH A LIMITED-TERM APPOINTMENT. MAY LAST UP TO TWO YEARS WITH AN OPPORTUNITY TO BE EXTENDED BUT WITH NO GUARANTEE. MAY ALSO HAVE THE ABILITY TO GO PERMANENT BUT WITH NO GUARANTEE.
Position will work full-time hours during the limited-term assignment.
This position performs maintenance of state trunk lines, structures, and right-of-ways in the Superior Region.
Duties include, but are not limited to, performing all surface, roadside general maintenance, and winter maintenance activities, operating various types of equipment and participating in the Transportation Maintenance Worker (TMW) work element program.
This position is required to travel to work sites throughout the Region, requiring overnight travel.
Winter work schedule includes afternoon, night, and weekend shift assignments with scheduled and unscheduled overtime.
Operate a vehicle or vehicle/trailer combination with a Gross Vehicle Weight Rating (GVWR) of 26,001 pounds or more (e.g., dump truck, snowplow, etc.) when performing maintenance activities.
The "Salary" listed above is a range that reflects the minimum rate at the entry (6) level through the maximum rate at the experienced (E8) level. Experience
Transportation Maintenance Worker 6
No specific type or amount of experience is required.
Transportation Maintenance Worker 7
One year of experience equivalent to a Transportation Maintenance Worker 6 or Laborer E6 with experience in roadway, roadside, bridge, or sign maintenance, or pavement marking.
Transportation Maintenance Worker E8
Two years of experience equivalent to a Transportation Maintenance Worker, including one year equivalent to a Transportation Maintenance Worker 7; or, one year of skilled trades experience at the E9 level.
Transportation Maintenance Worker 6, 7, E8
Possess a Commercial Driver’s License (CDL) at the time of appointment to the position.
Continuing employment requires possession of a CDL Group A with N or X endorsement and no air brake restrictions which must be obtained within 12 months from the date of hire into the position and maintained throughout employment in the position.
Transportation Maintenance Worker E8
The MDOT Statewide Work Element Coordinator must approve satisfactory completion of the MDOT TMW Work Element training and certification program.
