Job Description

Summary

This job involves helping plan and manage bridge projects in Michigan's Metro Region, including inspecting bridges, reviewing sites in the field, preparing project documents, and overseeing contracts with outside experts to ensure everything meets state standards.

It also supports broader efforts in budgeting, maintaining assets, and checking quality with teams across the department.

A good fit would be an engineer with a degree in the field and some experience in transportation or civil projects, who enjoys hands-on fieldwork and teamwork.

  • For level 12: Three years of professional engineering experience in transportation, including one year at P11 equivalent
  • Ability to participate in bridge inspections, scoping, and consultant contract management

Full Job Description

The Mackinac Bridge on a sunny day with blue skies and trees in the forefront with the MDOT logo and the MDOT webpage address.

This position assists with bridge scoping and consultant contract management for bridge projects in the Metro Region.

This position supports the development of bridge preservation and improvement projects by participating in detailed inspection and scoping efforts, participating in field reviews, preparing scoping documents, coordinating consultant contracts, and helping ensure alignment with Michigan Department of Transportation (MDOT) standards.

The position also provides support for programming, asset management, and quality assurance efforts in coordination with Region, Transportation Service Center (TSC), and Lansing staff.

This position requires possession of a valid driver’s license to perform field reviews and inspections.

The "Salary" listed above is a range that reflects the minimum rate at the entry (9) level through the maximum rate at the advanced (12) level. Based on education and experience, candidates will be reviewed to determine what level they are qualified for.

Requirements

Education

Possession of a bachelor of science degree in engineering.

Possession of a bachelor of science degree in civil engineering, preferred.


Experience

Transportation Engineer 9
No specific type or amount is required.

Transportation Engineer 10
One year of professional engineering experience involved in transportation systems and programs equivalent to a Transportation Engineer 9.

Transportation Engineer P11
Two years of professional engineering experience involved in transportation systems and programs equivalent to a Transportation Engineer, including one year equivalent to a Transportation Engineer 10.

Transportation Engineer 12
Three years of professional engineering experience involved in transportation systems and programs equivalent to a Transportation Engineer, including one year equivalent to
a Transportation Engineer P11.

Qualifications

Transportation Engineer 9 - 12

Possession of a registered professional engineer license as required by the State of Michigan may be substituted for 6 months of experience at the Transportation Engineer 9-12 levels. This substitution may only be used once for any employee for qualification of appointment or early reclassification.
