Job Description

Summary

This job involves maintaining roads and highways in Michigan's Bay Region by operating heavy equipment, clearing snow, and performing repairs to keep transportation routes safe and functional.

Workers handle tasks like plowing snow, using loaders and backhoes, and ensuring everything is done safely under supervision.

It's a good fit for hands-on individuals who enjoy outdoor work, have some experience with machinery or road maintenance, and are willing to get a commercial driver's license.

Key Requirements

  • High school diploma or equivalent education
  • Possess or obtain a Commercial Driver's License (CDL) Group A with N or X endorsement and no air brake restrictions within 12 months
  • For level 6: No prior experience required
  • For level 7: One year of experience in roadway, roadside, bridge, sign maintenance, or pavement marking
  • For level E8: Two years of relevant experience, including one year at level 7, or one year of skilled trades at E9 level
  • Ability to operate heavy equipment such as dump trucks, snowplows, front-end loaders, backhoes, and chain saws safely
  • Participation in the Transportation Maintenance Worker Work Element Training Program

Full Job Description

The Mackinac Bridge on a sunny day with blue skies and trees in the forefront with the MDOT logo and the MDOT webpage address.

Under direction of Supervisor or Transportation Maintenance Lead Worker 9, perform maintenance of state trunk lines within the right-of-way for geographic area assigned to the Bay Region Maintenance Garages and various tasks within the fifteen-county area of the Bay Region.

Operate various types of equipment including, but not limited to, heavy duty dump trucks with snowplows, underbody blades, sanders and salt spreaders, front end loader, air compressor, air tools weighing 65 to 90 pounds, backhoe, bulldozer, chain saws, street sweeper, etc.

Perform all tasks in a safe manner. Participate in the Transportation Maintenance Worker (TMW) Work Element Training Program.

Operate a vehicle or vehicle/trailer combination with a Gross Vehicle Weight Rating (GVWR) of 26,001 pounds or more (e.g., snowplows) when performing maintenance activities.


The "Salary" listed above is a range that reflects the minimum rate at the entry (6) level through the maximum rate at the experienced (E8) level. Based on education and experience, candidates will be reviewed to determine what level they are qualified for.

Experience

Transportation Maintenance Worker 6
No specific type or amount of experience is required.

Transportation Maintenance Worker 7
One year of experience equivalent to a Transportation Maintenance Worker 6 or Laborer E6 with experience in roadway, roadside, bridge, or sign maintenance, or pavement marking.

Transportation Maintenance Worker E8

Two years of experience equivalent to a Transportation Maintenance Worker, including one year equivalent to a Transportation Maintenance Worker 7; or, one year of skilled trades experience at the E9 level.

To be considered for this position you must:

Transportation Maintenance Worker Recruit: Possess a Commercial Learner’s Permit upon appointment to the position.

Continuing employment requires possession of a Commercial Driver’s License (CDL) Group A with either an N or X endorsement and no air brake restrictions which must be obtained within 12 months of the date of hire into the position and must maintain throughout employment in the position.

Transportation Maintenance Worker 6, 7, E8: Possess a Commercial Driver’s License (CDL) at the time of appointment to the position.

Continuing employment requires possession of a CDL Group A with N or X endorsement and no air brake restrictions which must be obtained within 12 months from the date of hire into the position and maintained throughout employment in the position.

  • Transportation Maintenance Worker E8: The MDOT Statewide Work Element Coordinator must approve satisfactory completion of the MDOT TMW Work Element training and certification program.
