Full Job Description

Performs complex routine and non-routine laboratory tests on asphalt, soils, aggregates, concrete, and steel in accordance with AASHTO, ASTM, and SC test methods and specifications at the Office of Materials and Research (OMR) District 6 Laboratory in Charleston. Performs and analyzes difficult calculations for test results and checks for compliance to specifications. Records and verifies test results on specialized technical forms.

Assists with equipment calibrations, maintenance, and verification; maintains documentation associated with the AASHTO Accreditation Program.

Assists with certification of laboratory technicians to ensure that proper testing and procedures are performed.

Assists with monitoring AASHTOWare (AWP) to ensure that sample data submitted is correct and assists inspectors and field personnel with any materials issues related to AWP Information. Assists in providing technical information and assistance concerning testing at the laboratory.

Assists as needed with Independent Assurance sampling and testing of materials used in construction projects. Assists with annual sampling of fine and coarse aggregate at quarries. Performs other related duties as assigned.












Requirements

A high school diploma and two (2) years of progressively responsible engineering technician related experience; or an approved acceptable equivalence. Attainment of a Technician Certification in accordance with the SCDOT Technician Certification Policy may substitute for six (6) months of directly related experience. A valid motor vehicle operator's license is required.

The physical demands for the essential functions involves frequent bending, kneeling, stooping and lifting up to 50 lbs. Walking for extended periods, treading rough terrain, working in close proximity to motoring traffic, and in natural environmental hazards. May require occasional exposure to noise. May require working outside of normal work schedules and weekends.
