Do you enjoy being in the field, communicating with others and seeing transportation projects come to life?

As an entry-level transportation engineer at the Michigan Department of Transportation (MDOT), you will support the construction engineer in administering construction projects within the Mount Pleasant Transportation Service Center (TSC) area, with opportunities to assist with regional and statewide construction activities, as needed.

You will work closely with contractors, technicians, consultants and partner agencies, serving as a key point of communication on active construction sites.

In this role, you’ll help ensure projects comply with federal, state and local requirements; assist with overseeing technician work related to staking, inspection and documentation; and support coordination with private and public agencies.

You will have the chance to showcase your strong communication skills, attention to detail and a willingness to engage in field-based problem solving, as this role requires regular site visits and interaction with contractors and stakeholders.

You won’t be doing this work alone.

As part of the Mount Pleasant TSC, you’ll join a collaborative construction team made up of experienced engineers, technicians and support staff who are committed to mentoring and knowledge sharing.

The team values clear communication, teamwork and learning in the field, and you’ll receive hands-on guidance as you build confidence in construction administration, contractor coordination and project oversight.

MDOT supports your growth through structured onboarding, on-the-job training and opportunities to learn from seasoned professionals across the region and statewide.

Whether you’re in the field or the office, you’ll be part of a team that is invested in your development and dedicated to delivering high-quality transportation projects for the communities we serve.

As the next assistant construction engineer, you will be responsible for:

  • Assisting the construction engineer in the administration and oversight of TSC/region/statewide construction projects and consultant contracts.
  • Performing onsite visits and meet with private citizens, utility companies, local officials, representatives from MDOT divisions, representatives from other state departments and Federal Highway Administration (FHWA) officials.
  • Assisting the construction engineer in the administration and oversight of TSC and local-area construction projects and with oversight of consultants performing construction administration/oversight duties for the TSC and federal-aid local agency projects.
  • Assist the construction engineer with TSC warranty duties for all construction contracts that contain warranties.
  • Assisting in the resolution of traffic and safety issues within the TSC area. Assisting in the preparation of preliminary and design final plans for highways, drainage and miscellaneous highway functions.
