Job Description

Summary

This job involves reviewing and approving permits for utility work related to road and transportation projects, coordinating with utility companies to adjust or relocate facilities that might be affected by construction, and acting as the main point of contact to ensure everything is cleared before projects start.

It's a senior engineering role focused on keeping transportation infrastructure projects on track without utility disruptions.

A good fit would be an experienced civil engineer who enjoys problem-solving, communicating with teams and external partners, and has a background in transportation systems.

Key Requirements

  • Bachelor of Science degree in engineering (civil engineering preferred)
  • Three years of professional engineering experience in transportation systems and programs
  • At least one year of experience equivalent to a Transportation Engineer P11 level
  • Possession of a registered professional engineer (PE) license in Michigan (can substitute for 6 months of experience, used once)
  • Ability to review and approve permit applications for utilities
  • Experience coordinating utility relocations and adjustments for construction projects
  • Strong liaison skills between designers, utility owners, and MDOT project teams

This position serves as a Senior Transportation Engineer serving as the primary Transportation Service Center (TSC) contact for reviewing and approving permit applications and coordinating the necessary adjustments and/or relocation of utility facilities anticipated to be impacted by project construction. This position serves as liaison between designers and utility owners and is responsible for providing the final utility clearance for assigned Michigan Department of Transportation (MDOT) projects.

The "Salary" listed above is a range that reflects the minimum rate through the maximum rate of the Transportation Engineer 12 position.

Requirements

Education

Possession of a bachelor of science degree in engineering.

Possession of a bachelor of science degree in civil engineering, preferred.


Experience
Three years of professional engineering experience involved in transportation systems and programs equivalent to a Transportation Engineer, including one year equivalent to a Transportation Engineer P11.

Qualifications

Transportation Engineer 9 - 12
Possession of a registered professional engineer license as required by the State of Michigan may be substituted for 6 months of experience at the Transportation Engineer 9-12 levels. This substitution may only be used once for any employee for qualification of appointment or early reclassification.
