This job is about leading a team that checks bridges to make sure they are safe and meet national standards, including inspecting parts like beams, decks, and foundations for damage or wear.
You'll keep detailed records, coordinate with local teams for access, and write reports on any problems found.
It's a great fit for someone with hands-on experience in construction inspection who enjoys working outdoors and ensuring public safety in transportation infrastructure.

In this position, you will oversee a bridge inspection assistant while executing a range of technical responsibilities related to the assessment of bridges and other structures, adhering to the National Bridge Inspection Standards (NBIS).
Your duties will include conducting safety inspections on existing bridges, evaluating all structural elements such as concrete footings, abutments, wing walls, bearings, back walls, steel beams, girders, truss members, pre-stressed concrete beams, timber construction, bridge decks, wearing surfaces, expansion devices, approach slabs, relief joints, piers, bents, rivets, bolts, welds, and various safety features.
You will also inspect for issues like accident damage, water erosion of footings, and the wear or corrosion of pins, eyebars, and other steel components, as well as the condition of bearings.
You will be responsible for maintaining comprehensive bridge inspection records, which include data from the Bridge Management System (BMS3), D-491 forms, photographs, field sketches, and other relevant documents specific to each bridge.
Occasionally, you may be assigned special tasks such as inspecting bridges under eight feet, documenting unique bridge conditions, conducting damage assessments, monitoring scour, or measuring the thickness of wearing surfaces and section loss.
It is essential to stay updated on BMS3 for inquiries and to ensure accurate data entry into the computer system.
Additionally, you will coordinate with County Maintenance Units and railroads as necessary, both verbally and in writing, to provide the required equipment, permits, and support staff for safe access to structures.
You will supervise the collection of field data, including photographs, sketches, narrative descriptions, inspection forms, and detailed reports.
Finally, you will prepare a well-organized and thoroughly documented bridge inspection report that addresses critical findings related to the current condition and deficiencies of the structures, in compliance with NBIS requirements.Interested in learning more?
