Summary

Key Requirements

  • Three years of experience in highway or bridge construction, inspection, or maintenance

  • Ability to conduct structural, underwater, and crane inspections and prepare detailed reports
  • Full-time availability with standard work hours (7:30 AM to 3:30 PM, Monday-Friday) and limited telework after probation

The Pennsylvania Department of Transportation (PennDOT), Engineering District 10, invites you to step beyond the confines of the office and immerse yourself in the field as a Transportation Construction Inspector. Requirements

As a Transportation Construction Inspector, you will perform a variety of technical responsibilities related to the inspection of materials and workmanship for bridge projects within Engineering District 10-0, ensuring compliance with established construction codes, plans, specifications, and National Bridge Inspection Standards (NBIS).

Your duties will include conducting structural inspections and gathering bridge inventory data in line with departmental policies and procedures to maintain a safe transportation system.

You will prepare detailed bridge inspection reports documenting findings regarding current conditions and any observed deficiencies.

You may also assist with conducting underwater inspections, crane inspections, and various deck surveys.

Additional functions will include inventorying, inspecting, and documenting current conditions and deficiencies of overhead sign structures, roadway retaining walls, and high mast lighting.

Work Schedule and Additional Information:

  • Full-time employment
  • Work hours are 7:30 AM to 3:30 PM, Monday - Friday, with a 30-minute lunch.
  • Telework: You may have the opportunity to work from home (telework) part-time, upon satisfactory completion of the probationary period.

    Telework is not available within the first six months of employment.

    In order to telework, you must have a securely configured high-speed internet connection and work from an approved location inside Pennsylvania.

    If you are unable to telework, you will have the option to report to the headquarters office in Indiana. The ability to telework is subject to change at any time.

  • Salary: Selected candidates who are new to employment with the Commonwealth of Pennsylvania will begin employment at the starting annual salary of $45,907.00 (before taxes).

Qualifications

QUALIFICATIONS

Minimum Experience and Training Requirements:

  • One year as an Engineering Technician (Commonwealth job title or equivalent Federal Government job title, as determined by the Office of Administration); or
  • Two years as a Transportation Technician or Construction Cost Technician 1 (Commonwealth job title or equivalent Federal Government job title, as determined by the Office of Administration); or
  • One year of construction inspection experience, and an associate’s degree in civil engineering, mechanical engineering, geotechnical engineering, surveying engineering technology, or a closely related engineering technology; or
  • Three years of experience in highway or bridge surveying, design, construction, or inspection work; or
  • Three years of experience in quality control of materials or building or construction industry experience, which includes reading and interpreting blueprints, plans, or schematics; or
  • An equivalent combination of experience and training.


Special Requirement:

  • This position requires possession of an active non-commercial Pennsylvania Class C Driver’s License or equivalent.
