Job Description

Summary

This job involves leading safety efforts for the Navy's AEGIS combat and missile defense systems, ensuring these complex technologies are safe through risk assessments, hazard analysis, and team oversight.

It requires coordinating with various military and defense groups to apply safety standards and provide expert guidance.

A good fit would be an experienced engineer with a strong background in naval systems safety and project management, who enjoys mentoring teams and handling high-stakes technical challenges.

Key Requirements

  • At least one year of specialized experience equivalent to GS-13/14 (NT-05) in technical systems engineering for Naval Combat Systems
  • Direct experience with system safety techniques, including risk management, hazard analysis, risk assessment, and mitigation strategies per MIL-STD-882E
  • Ability to interface with Navy and DoD organizations such as PEO IWS, NAVSEA, and WSESRB
  • Proficiency in preparing, evaluating, and reviewing technical documentation for safety programs
  • Skills in providing technical oversight, guidance, and coordination across multiple engineering disciplines
  • Experience leading system safety reviews, assessments, and test plans
  • Operational experience to train, advise, and mentor safety professionals

Full Job Description

You will serve as the AEGIS/ABMD Principal for Safety in the Systems Safety Engineering Division, Electromagnetic & Sensor Systems Department of NAVSURFWARCENDLD.

This position is part of the Warfare Centers Personnel Demonstration Project. The NT-06 pay band encompasses positions equivalent to GS-14 and GS-15.

Your resume must demonstrate at least one year of specialized experience at or equivalent to the NT-05 pay band (GS-13/14 equivalency) in the Federal service or equivalent experience in the private or public sector.

Specialized experience must demonstrate the following: executing technical systems engineering activities related to Naval Combat Systems with demonstrated and direct experience on system safety techniques, theories, and principles, including safety risk management, hazard analysis, risk assessment, and the development of mitigation strategies in compliance with MIL-STD-882E.

Examples of qualifying experience may include: Executing current, virtualized, or autonomous system safety programs; Ensuring technical rigor in support of the overall safety program execution, which consists of safety program definition/management, analysis, risk identification and assessment; Interfacing with multiple Navy Sponsor organizations to include Program Executive Office, Integrated Warfare Systems (PEO IWS), Sea-Based Weapon Systems, NAVSEA05, Weapon System Explosive Safety Review Board (WSESRB), Ship Design Managers (SDMs), Technical Authorities and other DoD/Department of the Navy (DoN) organizations; Preparing and evaluating technical documentation for system projects/programs; Experience in risk analysis execution and review; Providing technical oversight and guidance for program/project direction; Project coordination and oversight across multiple engineering disciplines.

  • You will serve as the overarching Principal for Safety (PFS) for both the AEGIS Combat System (CS) and AEGIS Ballistic Missile Defense (ABMD) CS Safety Program.
  • You will collaborate with multiple technical authorities, sponsors, and stakeholders to provide technical and programmatic systems safety engineering advice to Navy and Missile Defense Agency (MDA) leaders.
  • You will perform and oversee the execution of system safety in accordance with required standards, instructions, guidance, and policy.
  • You will ensure the CS safety program adheres to B70-developed processes, methodologies and technical standards, consistently applying technical rigor across all aspects of the AEGIS/ABMD program.
  • You will lead system safety reviews such as hazard analyses, safety assessments, and test plans, providing targeted technical direction to a team of scientists, engineers, and other system safety professionals working across the CS.
  • You will apply operational experience and systems safety subject matter expertise to train, advise, and mentor system safety practitioners in the application of systems safety processes and methodologies on combat systems.
