Subject to change*DESCRIPTION OF DUTIES/ESSENTIAL FUNCTIONS:Houston Public Works is seeking candidates who can:
• Perform moderately complex, skilled technical work in the design, installation, operation, maintenance and repair of data communications equipment and industrial control systems and instrumentation.
• Design, evaluate and implement microprocessor-based control equipment.
• Perform installation and maintenance of instrumentation and control appurtenances at water treatment facilities.
• Diagnose data communication system failures: interfaces with vendors to resolve problems with various types of data communications facilities.
• Evaluate process control equipment to make recommendations for improvement of performance; provides training for installation and operation of equipment.
• Operate test equipment to isolate software/hardware circuits or cable related problems.
• Repair and calibrate all components of process control and analytical systems; troubleshoots and repairs both digital and analog electronic equipment to the board level.
WORKING CONDITIONSThis position may involve considerable physical exertion, such as regular climbing of ladders, lifting of heavy objects (up to 80 pounds) on an occasional basis and/or assuming awkward positions for long periods of time. There are occasional exposures to significant levels of heat, cold, moisture and air pollution.
This is a Department of Houston Public Works position at the Tier I Level.
Requirements
EDUCATIONAL REQUIREMENTS:Requires an Associate's degree (two-year program) in a computer science, instrumentation or electronics discipline or the equivalent, such as certification in a technical/specialty program of up to three years in duration. .
EXPERIENCE REQUIREMENTS:Two years of experience in the design, installation, operation, and/or maintenance of a computerized data communications network or industrial control system are required.Relevant experience (as described above) may be substituted for education on a year-for-year basis.
LICENSE REQUIREMENTSMay require a valid class "C" Texas driver's license and compliance with the City of Houston's policy on driving (AP 2-2).
In the Public Works and Engineering Department, may require a valid class "C" or higher Texas Water or Wastewater Plant Operator's license.
Qualifications
Preference will be given to applicants with experience in maintaining medium/low voltage systems, knowledge of electrical controls, or that hold an active Texas Electrical Journeyman License.
