The West Virginia State Tax Division is seeking an advanced candidate who will primarily examine and audit complex tax returns and other related documents for completeness, accuracy, and compliance with WV law.
The incumbent will have in-depth knowledge of state tax laws, regulations, and filing requirements.
Regular tasks include verifying the accurate return filings while exercising independent judgement; corresponding and communicating with taxpayers and their representatives in writing or on the phone regarding issues and questions related to tax filings; communicating with auditors, attorneys, and other agency employees regarding issues related to tax filings; engaging in tax discovery and desk auditing programs resulting in assessment of tax or denial of refund claims utilizing the integrated tax system to accomplish everyday tasks along with other office computer applications; maintaining strict confidentiality with regard taxpayer information.
The ideal candidate will be self-motivated, have good written and oral communication skills; familiarity with Microsoft Office applications, including Excel; and, preferably, familiarity with Google applications, including Docs, Sheets and Gmail.
A history of tax auditing or tax accounting experience or expertise sufficient to handle advanced desk auditing is preferred. Performs related work as required.
Employment requires a fingerprint-based criminal-background check to be provided at the West Virginia Tax Division’s expense.
Failing to initiate the process or cooperate with this process, providing false or incomplete information, or discovery of disqualifying information will result in denial of, or dismissal from, employment or denial of transfer irrespective of when discovered.
The chosen applicant will also be subject to a tax compliance check.

Training: Associate degree from an accredited college or university.
At the appointing agency's discretion, competitive candidates may receive probationary appointment pending official verification of the qualifying degree.
The qualifying degree must be verified before the employee may be certified permanent.
OR
Substitution: Additional experience as described below may substitute for the required training at a rate of one (1) year of experience for every thirty (30) semester hours of training.
AND
Experience: Four (4) years of experience at the State Tax Division, or four (4) years of experience in providing accounting support and/or clerical office support.
OR
Substitution: Successful completion of a course of study in an accredited college or university which included three (3) semester hours of math and/or accounting may substitute for the experience as described above at a rate of thirty (30) semester hours of training for every one (1) year of experience.
