Full Job Description

This position is eligible for the Education Debt Reduction Program (EDRP), a student loan payment reimbursement program.

You must meet specific individual eligibility requirements in accordance with VHA policy and submit your EDRP application within four months of appointment.

Program Approval, award amount (up to $200,000) and eligibility period (one to five years) are determined by the VHA Education Loan Repayment Services program office after complete review of the EDRP application.

Basic Requirements: United States Citizenship: Non-citizens may only be appointed when it is not possible to recruit qualified citizens in accordance with VA Policy. Education.

Have a master's degree in social work from a school of social work fully accredited by the Council on Social Work Education (CSWE).

Graduates of schools of social work that are in candidacy status do not meet this requirement until the School of Social Work is fully accredited.

A doctoral degree in social work may not be substituted for the master's degree in social work.

Verification of the degree can be made by going to http://www.cswe.org/Accreditation to verify that the social work degree meets the accreditation standards for a masters of social work. Licensure.

Persons hired or reassigned to social worker positions in the GS-0185 series in VHA must be licensed or certified by a state to independently practice social work at the master's degree level.

Candidates must be proficient in spoken and written English to be appointed as authorized by 38 U.S.C. § 7403(f). Grade Determinations: Supervisory Social Worker, GS-13 (1) Experience/Education.

One year of experience equivalent to the GS-12 grade level.

Experience must demonstrate possession of advanced practice skills in a specialty area or in administration demonstrating progressively more professional competency and judgment.

Candidate may have certification or other post-master's degree training from a nationally recognized professional organization or university that includes a defined curriculum/course of study and internship, or equivalent supervised professional experience.

(2) Licensure/Certification. Individuals assigned as supervisory social workers must be licensed or certified at the advanced practice level, and must be able to provide supervision for licensure.

[(3) Demonstrated Knowledge, Skills, and Abilities.

In addition to the experience above, the candidate must demonstrate all of the following KSAs: (a) Ability to independently organize work, set priorities, and meet multiple deadlines.

(b) Skill in a range of supervisory duties which includes clinical supervision, consultation, negotiation with other departments and quality improvement.

(c) Ability to ensure provision of clinical social work services by supervised social workers.

(d) Ability to delegate authority, manage priorities, coordinate work, and follow up on pending issues to complete duties in an accurate and timely fashion.

(e) Ability to analyze organizational and operational problems, develop and implement solutions that result in efficient operations, and use data effectively to manage workload, quality, performance, and productivity within the service.

Total Rewards of a Allied Health Professional This position requires a thorough understanding of administrative and supervisory practices and principles, VHA, Medical Center policies, processes and procedures, an understanding of Social Work theory and practice, principles of program development and implementation, and the missions and goals of VHA Headquarters, VA South East Network VISN 7, the Medical Center, and Mental Health Service.

This position requires a strong commitment to and understanding of the concepts of primary care, continuity of care, interdisciplinary team functioning and comprehensive health care.

Also essential is commitment to the education of other disciplines, the Profession of Social Work, and the National Association of Social Workers Code of Ethics.

Knowledge and understanding of the aging process and differences in working with patients in all age ranges, including geriatrics, is required.

FUNCTIONS: The incumbent supervises a group of employees performing work at the GS-13 levels and below, including advanced practice social workers and social work program coordinators.

The incumbent will have oversight for assigned recovery oriented and peer support services.

The incumbent provides administrative, technical, and clinical supervision necessary for social workers to accomplish the work of the mental health service line.

Essential Supervisory Social Work Responsibilities (about 60% of the time) The incumbent has professional management and administrative responsibilities that are broad and complex in scope.

Decisions are made exercising wide latitude and independent judgment. He/she has line and staff authority for resource allocations within his/her area of responsibility.

The incumbent will ensure adequate Social Work coverage in all program areas under his/her responsibility, planning assignments and coverage systems based on program needs, workload and staff capability.

The incumbent must aid the professional development of social work staff within the Mental Health service line, identifying training needs and making provision for continuing education, training and development.

The incumbent monitors competency of social work staff and tracks renewal of State licensure and continuing education hours.

The incumbent assists staff in developing performance and professional goals and professional development plans.

He/she develops performance standards for staff, solicits feedback from staff and from interdisciplinary team members on performance of each of his/her social work staff, regularly reviews performance as compared with standards, and recommends annual performance appraisal ratings for social workers within the Mental Health service line.

Direct Patient Care and Other Duties (about 40% of the time) The incumbent is a licensed, clinically privileged social worker and member of the Medical Staff who practices at the advanced level.

He/she provides direct patient care as needed and assigned within the Mental Health service line including, but not necessarily limited to social work assessment, and a full range of clinical intervention, consultation, individual/group, couple and family psychotherapy.

The incumbent delivers a range of specialized interventions to Veterans and provides consultation to colleagues, renders professional opinions based on experience and expertise, develops new models of psychosocial assessment or intervention, and incorporates complex multiple causation in differential diagnosis and treatment.

The incumbent may utilize outcome evaluations to further treatment and designs system changes. Work Schedule: Monday - Friday, 8:00am - 4:30pm. Work schedule subject to change based on agency needs.
