The position reports to the Supervisory Police Officer (Lieutenant). To qualify for this position, applicants must meet all requirements by the closing date of this announcement, 02/23/2026.
You may qualify based on your experience as described below: Specialized Experience: You must have one year of specialized experience equivalent to at least the next lower grade GS-6 in the normal line of progression for the occupation in the organization.
Examples of specialized experience would typically include, but are not limited to: knowledge of a body of of basic or commonly used laws, rules, regulations, procedures, and operating methods to independently perform routine, recurring kinds of fixed post and patrol assignments.
Arresting violators caught in the act or who readily admit to guilt.
Questioning individuals at the scene of an incident to determine the reasons for a call for assistance, establishing the identity of injured parties, identifying the nature of incidents, and taking statements of victims, witnesses, and suspects.
Informing individuals about their rights as suspects and/or witnesses. Operating radar or other speed detection equipment and pursuing speeding vehicles when enforcing traffic regulations or laws.
Responding to calls or alarms involving crimes in progress or just discovered.
Note: Creditable specialized experience may have been gained in work on a police force; through service as a military police officer; in work providing visitor protection and law enforcement in parks, forests, or other natural resource or recreational environments; in performing criminal investigative duties; or in other work that provided the required knowledge and skills.
Experience as a security guard or corrections officer is generally not qualifying. Note: You must provide detailed information of your experience performed.
Information such as "I was a Patrolman", "I was a Police Officer for a number of years," or "I enforced Federal, State, county, and laws" is insufficient to determine your qualifications.
Experience must be fully documented on your resume and must include job title, duties, month and year start/end dates AND hour worked per week.
Driver's License Requirement: Applicants must possess a valid, unrestricted State driver's license, have a safe driving record, and demonstrate that he or she is medically qualified to operate the appropriate motor vehicle safely.
Applicants are required to pass agency Government Vehicle Drivers physical examination.

Firearm Requirement: VA Police Officers are required to carry agency-approved firearms while on duty on VA property.
Officers must achieve and maintain qualification/certification with the agency-approved firearms as condition of gaining and continuing employment as a Police Officer.
Applicants must be able to possess firearms under the terms of the Gun Control Act of 1968, as amended (18 U.S.C. 922(g)(9).
ADDITIONAL POLICE OFFICER CONDITIONS OF EMPLOYMENT: New VA Police Officers are required to attend an 8-week course at the VA Law Enforcement Training Center in Little Rock, Arkansas.
Satisfactory completion of this course is a condition of continued employment.
Designated Drug-Testing Position: Applicants tentatively selected for VA employment in a testing designated position are subject to urinalysis to screen for illegal drug use prior to appointment.
Applicants who refuse to be tested will be denied employment with VA. Applicants will not be appointed to the position if a verified positive drug test result is received.
A medical examination is required. The duties of these positions require moderate to arduous physical exertion and/or duties of a hazardous nature.
The following medical requirements apply to all applicants: good near and distant vision, ability to distinguish basic color, and ability to hear the conversational voice.

Preferred Experience: Must have a current VA police certification as a police officer, be at the pay grade of GS-06 for 52 weeks or greater. Preferred 3 years on the job.

Major Duties:
Duties Include, but are not limited to: Directs subordinate Police Officers engaged in law enforcement responsibilities.
Works in collaboration with the Police Supervisor carrying out PS's overall mission where most of the work is performed on Departmental property.
Plans work schedules and sequence of operations daily to assure an even flow and distribution of work, the expeditious handling of priority cases, and meeting of schedules and deadlines.
Revises work schedule to meet changes in workload considering factors such as peak loads, availability of manpower, and processing time requirements.
Assigns work to subordinate Police Officers based on considerations of such factors as difficulty and requirements of assignments; availability, capability, experience and special qualifications of employees; and other resources available.
Formulates and issues (individually or collectively with other Police supervisors or Security Specialists) written instructions and procedures and special instructions for non-routine or complex assignments or to clarify published guidelines.
Prepares performance standards; reviews work in progress or upon completion; analyzes logs and activity reports or other data to ascertain problems in accuracy, adequacy, adherence to procedures, etc., and takes corrective action as necessary; reviews and accepts, amends or rejects work when quality standards have not been completely met.
Keeps officers informed of management goals and objectives, and keeps higher-level supervisors informed of employee's performance concerns and complaints.
Prepares formal requests to fill Police Officer vacancies or to recruit additional personnel to meet workload requirements.
Formulates training plans for assigned Police Officers; conducts or coordinates informal training to broaden employee skills and to provide back-up skills through cross-training; and recommends formal training courses.
Responds to highly dangerous and active crimes in progress and makes independent decisions to take/direct/coordinate immediate steps to preserve life and property.
Trains Police Officers in the use of specialized vehicles and equipment, policies and procedures in support of law enforcement and security operations.
Oversees investigations, prisoner transports, patient search and recovery, life-saving efforts, disaster response and recovery, asset protection during transit, training, and other matters.
Identifies and preserves evidence, writes comprehensive incident reports, prepares case files and testifies in court as it pertains to enforcing laws and regulations. Work Schedule: 80 hr.
