Job Description

Summary

This job involves leading efforts to identify and manage workplace hazards like chemicals, biological agents, and physical risks in a military health clinic, while advising managers and conducting safety assessments.

A good fit would be someone with a strong background in health sciences or engineering who enjoys supervising teams, solving complex safety issues, and ensuring compliance with regulations in a government setting.

About the Position: Located at Army Health Clinic - Aberdeen Proving Ground, MD.

This is a Direct Hire Authority (DHA) Solicitation utilizing the DHA for Certain Personnel of the DoD to recruit and appoint qualified candidates to positions in the competitive service.

Basic Requirement for a Supervisory Industrial Hygienist: Degree: Bachelor's or graduate (or higher level) degree in industrial hygiene, occupational health sciences, occupational and environmental health, toxicology, safety sciences, or related science.

The education must be accredited by an accrediting body recognized by the U.S. Department of Education at the time the degree was obtained.

OR Related Degree: Bachelor's degree in a branch of engineering, physical science, or life science that included 12 semester hours in chemistry, including organic chemistry, and 18 additional semester hours of courses in any combination of chemistry, physics, engineering, health physics, environmental health, biostatistics, biology, physiology, toxicology, epidemiology, or industrial hygiene.

The education must be accredited by an accrediting body recognized by the U.S. Department of Education at the time the degree was obtained.

For engineering degrees to be acceptable, the curriculum must be in a school of engineering with at least one curriculum accredited by the Accreditation Board for Engineering and Technology (ABET) as a professional engineering curriculum.

OR Certification from the American Board of Industrial Hygiene (ABIH).

In addition to meeting the basic requirement above, to qualify for this position you must also meet the qualification requirements listed below: Specialized Experience: One year of specialized experience which includes conducting surveys of assigned areas to determine the presence of potentially harmful chemical, physical, and/or biological hazards; preparing detailed written reports of survey findings including health hazards identified and recommended corrective actions; researching available industrial hygiene regulations/guidance; and providing training and/or consulting on a variety of industrial hygiene and/or occupational health topics.

This definition of specialized experience is typical of work performed at the next lower grade/level position in the federal service (GS-12).

Some federal jobs allow you to substitute your education for the required experience in order to qualify.

For this job, you must meet the qualification requirement using experience alone--no substitution of education for experience is permitted. Major Duties:

  • Prepare and/or review instructions and directives to formulate policy, reconcile program differences, establish objectives, and provide procedural guidance.
  • Provide consultative services to management and technical personnel on a wide variety of occupational health matters.
  • Plan and direct Industrial Hygiene surveys and evaluations of very complex or politically sensitive work operations involving hazardous chemical, biological and physical agents.
  • Conduct audits and assessments of Industrial Hygiene and related health programs for DoD, resident military component activities.
  • Direct, review, and evaluate proposed new work processes and construction/demolition plans to ensure incorporation of adequate measures for prevention of occupational health hazards.
  • Interpret new standards or proposed draft standards/regulations and their anticipated impact.
  • Collaborate with healthcare consultants, engineers and industry representatives during project design and installation.
  • Provide guidance and consultation on health standards and criteria and ensure that appropriate consideration is given to occupational health matters in the plans and programs for the development of facilities, equipment, and procedures.
  • Exercise full supervision and management authority for long range planning, goal setting and evaluation of subordinate staff.
