Job Description

Summary

This job involves leading a team of firefighters at a U.S.

Army base in West Point, New York, where you'll oversee emergency responses to fires, medical issues, and hazardous materials while managing daily operations across multiple fire stations.

As Assistant Fire Chief, you'll also help plan fire prevention programs, ensure buildings meet safety codes, and work with community groups to support the base's mission.

Key Requirements

  • One year of specialized experience at GS-9 level or equivalent, including overseeing fire control, emergency medical, and HAZMAT responses

  • Possess and maintain DoD Firefighter Certifications: Fire Officer III, Fire Inspector II, Fire Instructor II

Full Job Description

This is a Direct Hire Authority (DHA) solicitation utilizing the DHA for Certain Personnel of the DoD Workforce to recruit and appoint qualified candidates to positions in the competitive service.

About the Position: This position is included under the provisions of Special Retirement Coverage (SRC) and may have both a maximum entry age and a mandatory retirement date.

Salary based on 144 hour work schedule. Who May Apply: US Citizens In order to qualify, you must meet the requirements described below.

Experience refers to paid and unpaid experience, including volunteer work done through National Service programs (e.g., Peace Corps, AmeriCorps) and other organizations (e.g., professional; philanthropic; religious; spiritual; community; student; social).

You will receive credit for all qualifying experience, including volunteer experience.

Specialized Experience: One year of specialized experience which includes: 1) overseeing work in controlling and extinguishing fires, emergency medical and HAZMAT situations 2) distributing, coordinating, and monitoring work assignments of others; 3) and evaluating, planning and directing the fire prevention and protection programs and operations.

This definition of specialized experience is typical of work performed at the first lower grade/level position in the federal service (GS-09).

Some federal jobs allow you to substitute your education for the required experience in order to qualify.

For this job, you must meet the qualification requirement using experience alone -- no substitution of education for experience is permitted.

Selective Placement Factor: In addition to the specialized experience and/or education required to qualify for the GS-11 level you must also possess and maintain ALL the following Department of Defense (or reciprocal equivalent) certification, certified through DoD Fire and Emergency Services Certification System, International Fire Service Accreditation Congress (IFSAC), or the Fire Service Professional Qualifications System (PRO-Board) in accordance with DoD 6055.06-M.

Must possess and maintain DoD Firefighter Certifications: Fire Officer III, Fire Inspector II, Fire Instructor II, Hazardous Material Operations, Hazardous Material Incident Command, Firefighting and Emergency Medical Technician (EMT-Basic or higher) certification from the state of New York or National Registry of Emergency Medical Technicians (NREMT).

NOTE: You MUST attach a copy of ALL the required certificates to your application package. Major Duties:

  • As a Supervisory Firefighter, you will perform the following duties:
  • Responsible for overall management and oversight of the Emergency Response Services Branch, Fire and Emergency Services Division.
  • Serve as the Assistant Fire Chief in charge of the Emergency Response Services Branch.
  • Serve as a senior administrative staff member sharing in the overall management of the division with the Fire Chief.
  • Direct operational activities for three fire stations including care and maintenance of equipment and facilities.
  • Review plans for construction and building modifications to assure compliance with DOD, Army and National Building Fire Codes.
  • Participate in committees, working groups, and task forces with installation personnel to improve or support the USMA mission.
  • Participate with local community emergency service organizations.
