Summary

This job involves leading a team of firefighters at a U.S.

Key Requirements

  • One year of specialized experience in supervising firefighters for fire control, emergency medical, and HAZMAT situations (GS-09 equivalent for current federal employees; GS-10 for external applicants)
  • Possess and maintain DoD, Pro-Board, or IFSAC certifications: Fire Officer III, Fire Instructor II, Fire Inspector II, HAZMAT Incident Commander, and Airport Firefighter
  • Possess and maintain Emergency Medical Technician-Basic (EMT-B) certification from the State of Maryland or National Registry of Emergency Medical Technicians (NREMT-B)
  • Experience in scheduling, monitoring work assignments, and planning fire prevention/protection training programs
  • For current federal employees: 52 weeks of time-in-grade at GS-09 or equivalent
  • Eligibility under specific employment authorities (e.g., current Army civilians, veterans, military spouses)
  • Subject to Special Retirement Coverage (SRC) with maximum entry age and mandatory retirement provisions

About the Position: This position is located with the Directorate of Emergency Services, Fire Department on Aberdeen Proving Ground in Harford, MD.

Specialized Experience Current Federal Employees: I have one year of specialized experience equivalent to the GS-09 grade level in the Federal service which includes 1) Supervising work of subordinate firefighters in controlling and extinguishing fires, emergency medical and HAZMAT situations; 2) Scheduling and monitoring work assignments of others; AND 3) Planning and directing the fire prevention and protection training programs and operations.

This definition of specialized experience is typical of work performed at the second lower grade/level position in the federal service (GS-09).

External Applicants: I have one year of specialized experience equivalent to the GS-10 grade level in the Federal service which includes 1) Planning and directing the operations of subordinate firefighters; 2) Performing administrative and management tasks; AND 3) Developing and implementing firefighting training activities such as, emergency medical response, hazardous material response, and fire suppression.

This definition of specialized experience is typical of work performed at the next lower grade/level position in the federal service (GS-10).

Selective Placement Factors: This position requires you to possess and maintain at the time of application the following DoD, Pro-Board, or IFSAC Firefighter Certification levels: Fire Officer III, Fire Instructor II, Fire Inspector II, HAZMAT Incident Commander and Airport Firefighter.

This position requires you to possess and maintain Emergency Medical Technician-Basic Certification issued by the State of Maryland or National Registry Emergency Medical Technician-Basic (NREMT-B).

Time in Grade Requirement: Applicants who have held a General Schedule (GS) position within the last 52 weeks must have 52 weeks of Federal service at the next lower grade or equivalent (GS-09).

Some federal jobs allow you to substitute your education for the required experience in order to qualify.

For this job, you must meet the qualification requirement using experience alone -- no substitution of education for experience is permitted. Major Duties:

  • Serve as the Assistant Fire Chief/Shift Supervisor in charge of the Emergency Services Division.
  • Coordinates with Fire Chief in planning and administration within activities of the fire prevention and protection programs.
  • Investigates fires to determine cause, origin, and contributing factors; assesses damage and monetary loss; and preserves evidence for official proceedings.
  • Performs regular inspections of fire stations to ensure they are clean, orderly, and operated according to established policies.
  • Ensures that all required records and data files for the Fire Prevention and Protection Division are accurately maintained and current.
  • Briefs the Fire Chief and incoming shift supervisors on all significant events, including alarms, service requests, equipment failures, and operational changes.
  • Supervise and direct the work of subordinate firefighters.
  • Plans and conducts training and educational activities in fire prevention and protection programs.
