Summary

This job is for a lead firefighter at an Army base in Kansas, where you'll supervise a team handling fires, rescues, and hazardous material incidents while ensuring everyone and everything is ready for emergencies.

Key Requirements

  • Experience in performing hands-on firefighting duties like handling hoses, rescues, CPR, and first aid

  • U.S. citizenship and ability to pass background checks; subject to special retirement coverage with maximum entry age and mandatory retirement

Full Job Description

This is a Direct Hire Authority (DHA) solicitation utilizing the DHA for Certain Personnel of the DoD Workforce to recruit and appoint qualified candidates to positions in the competitive service.

About the Position: This position is included under the provisions of Special Retirement Coverage (SRC) and may have both a maximum entry age and a mandatory retirement date.

Position approved for Firefighter special retirement coverage. Who May Apply: US Citizens In order to qualify, you must meet the requirements described below.

Experience refers to paid and unpaid experience, including volunteer work done through National Service programs (e.g., Peace Corps, AmeriCorps) and other organizations (e.g., professional; philanthropic; religious; spiritual; community; student; social).

You will receive credit for all qualifying experience, including volunteer experience.

Specialized Experience: One year of specialized experience which includes: (1) controlling or extinguishing fires as a member of an organized military, industrial, volunteer, or governmental fire department or brigade; (2) rescue operations; (3) detection, reduction, or elimination of potential fire hazards; (4) operation of fire communications equipment; (5) controlling hazardous materials incidents; and (6) developing, implementing, or providing training in fire protection and prevention.

This definition of specialized experience is typical of work performed at the next lower grade/level position in the federal service (GS-08).

Selective Placement Factor: In addition to the specialized experience and/or education required to qualify for the GS-09 level you must also possess and maintain ALL the following Department of Defense (or reciprocal equivalent) certification, certified through DoD Fire and Emergency Services Certification System, International Fire Service Accreditation Congress (IFSAC), or the Fire Service Professional Qualifications System (PRO-Board) in accordance with DoD 6055.06-M.

Must possess and maintain DoD Firefighter Certifications: Firefighter I, Firefighter II, Fire Instructor I, Fire Inspector I, Fire Officer II, HAZ/MAT Incident Commander.

Emergency Medical Technician, EMT-Basic certification (or higher) from the state of Kansas or National Registry of Emergency Medical Technicians Card indicating a future expiration date when applicable.

NOTE: You MUST attach a copy of ALL the required certificates to your application package. Major Duties:

  • As a Supervisory Firefighter, you will perform the following duties:
  • Directly supervise civilian employees and military personnel, as applicable.
  • Direct the placement of equipment, personnel, application of fire extinguishing agents and rescue personnel.
  • Perform firefighting duties such as handling hose, performing rescue operations, extinguishing fire, performing as a HAZ/MAT team member, performing cardiopulmonary resuscitation (CPR) and emergency first aid as required.
  • Ensure that personnel and equipment are in a constant state of readiness for immediate response to firefighting and rescue operations.
  • Plan work to be accomplished, set and adjust short-term priorities, and prepare schedules for completion of work.
  • Assign work and/or crew assignment based on priorities, selective consideration of the difficulty and requirements of assignments and the capabilities of employees.
