Job Description

Summary

This job is for a lead firefighter who oversees a team in a Navy base's emergency services, handling everything from fighting fires and responding to hazardous materials to training staff and managing daily operations.

It's ideal for someone with hands-on firefighting experience who enjoys leading others and ensuring safety in high-pressure situations.

The role requires strong organizational skills and a commitment to ongoing training and team support.

Key Requirements

  • At least one year of specialized experience at GS-07 or GS-08 level (or equivalent) in fire control, extinguishing fires in organized departments, and operating firefighting equipment
  • Possession of all required certifications: Firefighter I/II, HazMat Awareness/Operations/Incident Commander, Driver Operator Pumper, Fire Officer I/II, Fire Inspector I, Fire Instructor I, NREMT, and CPR (from DoD, NREMT, IFSAC, or Proboard)
  • Experience providing hazardous material incident response
  • Experience developing, implementing, or delivering training in fire protection and prevention
  • Ability to supervise and direct lead firefighters and paramedics, including shift assignments and performance assessments
  • Skills in basic life support, non-invasive emergency medical procedures, and preparing reports on emergency responses and inspections

Full Job Description

You will serve as a SUPERVISORY FIREFIGHTER in the FIRE AND EMERGENCY SERVICES DEPARTMENT of NAVSTA GREAT LAKES IL.

For outside applicants claiming VEOA (i.e., those without current or prior Federal competitive or excepted service) must meet specialized experience equivalent to the GS-08 grade level in the Federal Service or equivalent experience in the private or public sector.

Your resume must demonstrate at least one year of specialized experience at or equivalent to the GS-08 grade level or pay band in the Federal service or equivalent experience in the private or public sector performing the following duties: Experience controlling or extinguishing fires as a member of an organized military, industrial, volunteer, or governmental fire department or brigade.

Experience developing, implementing, or providing training in fire protection and prevention. Experience operating a variety of firefighter vehicles, apparatuses and equipment.

Experience providing hazardous material incident response.

Current Permanent Employees within DoD must meet specialized experience equivalent to the GS-07 grade level in the Federal Service or equivalent experience in the private or public sector.

Your resume must demonstrate at least one year of specialized experience at or equivalent to the GS-07 grade level or pay band in the Federal service or equivalent experience in the private or public sector performing the following duties: Experience controlling or extinguishing fires as a member of an organized military, industrial, volunteer, or governmental fire department or brigade; Experience operating a variety of firefighter vehicles, apparatuses or equipment; Experience initiating established medical protocols to perform basic life support and performing non-invasive emergency medical procedures; NOTE: This information must be fully supported in your resume to be considered for the position.

In addition, this position requires possession of the following certifications: 1) Firefighter I 2) Firefighter II 3) HazMat Awareness 4) HazMat Operations 5) HazMat Incident Commander 6) Driver Operator Pumper 7) Fire Officer I 8) Fire Officer II 9) Fire Inspector I 10) Fire Instructor I 11) NREMT 12) CPR These certifications must have been awarded by DoD, NREMT, IFSAC or Proboard to meet the requirements.

  • You will provide immediate oversight and direction of GS-0081 Lead Firefighters and paramedics with day-to-day operations including assigning shifts to employees based on deadlines.
  • You will develop training for junior employees in fire protection or prevention to enhance performance in emergency support functions.
  • You will counsel employees on work and basic terms of employment and benefits. You will hear and resolve employee complaints and refers the more serious complaints to leadership.
  • You will prepare reports for higher level supervisors concerning emergency responses, training, maintenance, inspections, or other topics about firefighting.
  • You will develop training for junior employees in fire protection or prevention to enhance performance in emergency support functions.
  • You will assess a junior firefighter or employee work performance to determine if performance objectives are being met.
  • You will present fire protection and prevention education or training to employees.
  • You will develop a fire protection or fire prevention program for a fire department.
  • You will manage the development and implementation of a risk management plan for a fire department.
  • You will prepare inspection reports to document findings of fire safety deficiencies.
