Summary

This job involves leading a team of fire safety experts on a U.S.

Army base in Kansas, ensuring buildings and systems meet fire prevention standards through inspections, training, and coordination with local authorities.

It requires hands-on experience in fire codes and emergency response, with a demanding 56-hour workweek and potential for acting as the top fire official when needed.

Key Requirements

  • One year of specialized experience at GS-09 level, including interpreting fire prevention policies, coordinating trainings, advising on fire codes, and reviewing construction plans for NFPA compliance
  • Possess and maintain all required DoD Firefighter Certifications: Fire Officer III, Fire Instructor II, Fire Inspector III, HAZMAT Incident Commander, Airport Firefighter, and Plans Examiner I (or reciprocal equivalents from IFSAC or PRO-Board)
  • U.S. Citizenship
  • Ability to pass a background check and meet Special Retirement Coverage (SRC) provisions for firefighters, including maximum entry age and mandatory retirement date
  • Experience in supervising personnel, including maintaining records, approving leave, and providing counseling

This is a Direct Hire Authority (DHA) solicitation utilizing the DHA for Certain Personnel of the DoD Workforce to recruit and appoint qualified candidates to positions in the competitive service.

About the Position: This position is included under the provisions of Special Retirement Coverage (SRC) and may have both a maximum entry age and a mandatory retirement date.

Experience refers to paid and unpaid experience, including volunteer work done through National Service programs (e.g., Peace Corps, AmeriCorps) and other organizations (e.g., professional; philanthropic; religious; spiritual; community; student; social).

Specialized Experience: One year of specialized experience which includes 1) interpreting fire prevention policy and procedures for implementation; 2) coordinating fire prevention related trainings; 3) advising on fire code requirements; and 4) reviewing construction plans for new or modifications for compliance with National Fire Protection Association (NFPA).

This definition of specialized experience is typical of work performed at the next lower grade/level position in the federal service (GS-09).

Some federal jobs allow you to substitute your education for the required experience in order to qualify.

For this job, you must meet the qualification requirement using experience alone -- no substitution of education for experience is permitted.

Selective Placement Factor: In addition to the specialized experience and/or education required to qualify for the GS-11 level you must also possess and maintain ALL the following Department of Defense (or reciprocal equivalent) certification, certified through DoD Fire and Emergency Services Certification System, International Fire Service Accreditation Congress (IFSAC), or the Fire Service Professional Qualifications System (PRO-Board) in accordance with DoD 6055.06-M.

Must possess and maintain DoD Firefighter Certifications: Fire Officer III, Fire Instructor II, Fire Inspector III, HAZMAT Incident Commander, Airport Firefighter, Plans Examiner I.

NOTE: You MUST attach a copy of ALL the required certificates to your application package. Major Duties:

  • As a Supervisory Fire Protection Inspector, you will perform the following duties:
  • Directs Fire Prevention Branch in the daily application of sound fire prevention practices on the installation.
  • Directs follow-up inspections for all systems which have been out of order or repaired.
  • Inspects maintenance of all suppression and detection systems on post.
  • Maintains close liaisons with city, county, state, and federal agencies ensuring compliance and coordination of all applicable laws.
  • Maintains time and attendance records, approves leave and prepares all reports dealing with personnel under his supervision.
  • Advises, counsels and instructs employees on both work and administrative matters.
  • May act as the Fire Chief in his or the Deputy Chief's absence assuming full supervisory functions and controls.
  • Provides immediate direction of department fire prevention and inspection, and carries out the policies and instructions of the Fire Chief.
