Full Job Description

The Bureau of Labor Statistics measures labor market activity, working conditions, price changes, and productivity in the U.S. economy to support public and private decision making.

These positions are located in the Bureau of Labor Statistics, Office of Prices and Living Conditions.

You must meet the Basic Requirements and the Minimum Qualifications to qualify for Supervisory Economist, as described below.

Basic Requirements: Economist, GS-0110: A) Degree in economics, that included at least 21 semester hours in economics and 3 semester hours in statistics, accounting or calculus.

OR B) A combination of education and experience - courses equivalent to a major in economics, as shown in A above, plus appropriate experience or additional education.

In addition to meeting the Basic Requirement above, applicants must also meet the Minimum Qualifications to be considered.

Minimum Qualifications: Economist, GS-0110: Specialized Experience is the experience that equipped the applicant with the particular knowledge, skills, and abilities (KSA's) to perform the duties of the position successfully, and that is typically in or related to the position to be filled.

To be creditable, specialized experience must have been equivalent to at least the next lower grade level. Specialized experience should include a thorough range of complex economic professional work.

GS-15: Applicants must have one year of specialized experience equivalent to at least the GS-14 grade level.

Qualifying specialized experience includes: Planned and directed projects and other tasks to accomplish organizational goals; Managed staff and exercised full supervisory authority; Provided technical expertise, advice, and consultation to meet organizational goals.

Individual Occupation Requirements for Economist Series GS-110. Major Duties:

Three positions will be filled using this vacancy announcement: A Supervisory Economist serving as the Deputy Associate Commissioner for the Office of Prices and Living Conditions (OPLC).

A Supervisory Economist serving as the Chief of the Branch of Index Methods, Analysis and Evaluations (BIMAE) for the Division of International Prices (DIP).

A Supervisory Economist serving as the Chief of the Branch of Consumer Prices (BCP) for the Division of Consumer Prices and Price Indexes (DCPPI).

Duties for these positions include, but are not limited to the following: Plans and directs branch, program and/or office operations within OPLC.

Oversees, develops and executes budget, administrative and human resource activities for OPLC.

Manages assigned resources and provides leadership to achieve organizational goals and to produce the program's outputs within budget constraints, schedule deadlines, and quality requirements.

Serves as a member of the program or office senior management group which is responsible for setting policies, determining short-term and long-range priorities, and assigning work to steering committees and teams to achieve the organization's goals.

Coordinates cross organizational and/or cross division efforts to improve methods, processes and policies.

Directs research efforts and special studies to identify methods and procedures to reduce the measurement error associated with the estimation of the organization's price indexes.

Assures the organization conducts accurate review of price and index data for the program's price indexes under the strict time constraints and the Bureau's requirements for safeguarding confidential and sensitive data.

Assures the quality of the final publication of the organization's monthly Principal Federal Economic Indicator (PFEI) news release.

Assists the Assistant or Associate Commissioner in formulating policies and methods to ensure a timely, accurate and relevant analysis of price change and that all aspects of the organization's outputs are consistent with the economic theory of price indexes and international best practices for statistical programs.

Ensures compliance with policies, standards, and data integrity requirements. Represents the Bureau of Labor Statistics (BLS) in meetings with internal and external stakeholders.
