Summary

This summer internship role involves helping with roadway construction projects for the City of St. Louis, including inspecting work sites, documenting progress, and ensuring safety standards are met.

It's a hands-on opportunity for undergraduate engineering or architecture students to gain real-world experience under the guidance of experienced professionals.

Ideal candidates are motivated college students with at least one year of relevant coursework who are eager to learn and work flexibly up to 40 hours per week.

Key Requirements

  • Completion of at least one year of college coursework in Engineering or Architecture (two years for Aide II)
  • Assist in inspecting roadway construction for compliance with plans and standards
  • Observe, document, and record construction activities, quantities, and materials
  • Take field measurements, perform basic layout and staking, and verify traffic control
  • Collect and organize field data for project reports
  • Effective written and oral communication skills
  • Valid driver's license (preferred)

Full Job Description

Seeking highly motivated undergraduate engineering students to join the St. Louis County Department of Transportation & Public Works team for paid internships.

This will be an invaluable experience which will provide hands-on engineering experience. Positions will be opening in a variety of areas including roadway planning and development, roadway construction, material testing, roadway maintenance and traffic operations. Interns will receive training, guidance and mentorship from experienced engineers and staff.

The work schedule for the Interns is flexible and will allow up to 40 hours per week during the summer with start and end dates which will correspond with school schedules. Internships will also be available for a variety of hours within the school year. The salary for this position will be between $16.39 - $20.65 hourly and will depend on the Intern's qualifications.

Requirements

Essential Function Examples
  • Assist in inspecting roadway construction activities to ensure compliance with project plans, specifications, and standards
  • Observe and document contractor operations, materials, and workmanship for quality assurance
  • Record daily construction quantities, labor, and equipment usage
  • Take field measurements and calculate progress and quantities
  • Collect and organize field data and reports for project documentation
  • Verify traffic control setups to ensure work zone safety and compliance
  • Basic construction layout and staking

Qualifications

Summer Engineering Aide I:
  • Completion of one year of college course work in Architecture or Engineering.

Summer Engineering Aide II:
  • Completion of two years of college course work in Architecture or Engineering.
  • Preferred candidates will have a valid driver's license.
