Summary

This entry-level internship with the U.S.

Coast Guard involves helping experienced workers with hands-on tasks in shipbuilding and repair, such as using tools for fitting parts together and basic welding on boats and vessels.

It's part of a student program that could lead to a full-time job after finishing school and gaining work experience.

Full Job Description

This position is part of the Pathways Internship Program and is located in the Department of Homeland Security, U.S. Coast Guard, OFFICE OF NAVAL ENGINEERING in Baltimore, MD.

Upon successful completion of the Pathways Program, and at the agency's discretion, appointees may be converted to term or permanent positions in the competitive service.

If converted, promotion potential is the WG-05.

In order to be eligible for a Pathways Intern Program appointment, you must be a student enrolled or accepted for enrollment as a full or part-time degree (diploma, certificate, etc) seeking student in an accredited high school, technical or vocational school, 2-year or 4-year college or university, graduate or professional school.

Selected candidates will be required to submit a copy of their transcripts and a letter of enrollment or acceptance for enrollment prior to appointment.

If selected, you: must sign a Pathways Internship Program Participant Agreement; may be employed throughout the academic year; must maintain status as a current student; maintain good academic standing; must furnish course registration information at the start of each school term; and must provide verification of academic status (transcript) at the end of each academic term.

Upon completion of all academic and program requirements, selectees may be non-competitively converted to a term or permanent position in the competitive service.

NOTE: To be eligible for conversion, you must complete 480 hours of work (if you meet all required criteria, up to 320 hours may be waived if: (1) you complete 320 hours of career-related work experience under an Internship Program appointment and have demonstrated high potential by outstanding academic achievement and exceptional job performance; or (2) you complete comparable non-federal internship experience in a field or functional area related to your target position).

National Service Experience (i.e., volunteer experience): Experience refers to paid and unpaid experience, including volunteer work done through National Service programs (e.g., Peace Corps, AmeriCorps) and other organizations (e.g., professional, philanthropic, religious, spiritual, community, student, social).

Volunteer work helps build critical competencies, knowledge, and skills and can provide valuable training and experience that translates directly to paid employment.

You will receive credit for all qualifying experience, including volunteer experience.

Applicants will be rated and ranked based on their knowledge of the following job elements: Likelihood of success in assignments which require interest, motivation, and readiness to do simple work (SCREENOUT) Ability to handle weights and loads Ability to follow oral directions Dexterity and safety Major Duties:

This is an entry level position in the structural area and will be responsible for assisting mechanics and journeymen in the ship fitting and welding trades.

Being a Coast Guard civilian makes you a valuable member of the Coast Guard team.

Typical work assignments include: The construction, repair, maintenance, overhaul and conversion of a wide variety of types and sizes of marine crafts and vessels in connection with miscellaneous manufacturing projects performed at the Yard.

Using power and hand tools common to the trade, the incumbent performs a variety of less difficult tasks related to ship fitting and welding, such as assisting in layout, fabricating and erecting assemblies, and tack welding framing and foundations Mandatory training is required which must be successfully completed and other training may occur as necessary for success in the position.
