Job Description

Summary

This job involves working in a military grocery store in Germany, where you'll stock shelves, organize inventory, handle stock rotation, and operate a forklift to move goods safely.

About the Position: This position is with the Defense Commissary Agency (DeCA), Vilseck Commissary located in Vilseck, Germany.

Minimum Qualifications (Screen Out Element): Ability to do the work of a(n) Store Worker (Forklift Operator) without more than normal supervision.

You must have the ability to perform common tasks showing job responsibility and following instructions; prepare, arrange, or stack items together for safety and neatness; rotate old stock; recognize and report items of poor or unacceptable quality.

Work performed under close supervision of a work leader or journey-level employee who observes tasks in progress and upon completion to make sure they are properly performed.

Ability To Do The Work Of The position Without More Than Normal Supervision Ability to Interpret Instructions, Specification, etc.

Dexterity and Safety Knowledge of Materials Technical Practices (theoretical, precise, artistic) Work Practices (includes keeping things neat, clean, and in order) Physical Effort: The work requires continuous walking, standing, bending, or stooping, and using arm movements to fill the store's shelves and counters.

The incumbent frequently lifts or moves heavy boxes or crates weighing up to 40 pounds, and occasionally over 40 pounds.

While operating a forklift, the incumbent uses moderate physical effort in operating hand and foot controls while driving, turning, starting, and stopping the forklift and raising, lowering, and tilting loads being moved.

Strain is caused by the vibration of the forklift. Working Conditions: Most of the work is performed in the store display areas which are well lighted and maintained at a comfortable temperature.

The store aisles are often crowded with customers and grocery carts. When working in the storage area or loading dock, the incumbent may be exposed to hot or cold weather or damp or drafty conditions.

May be exposed to differences in temperatures in storing or obtaining items in refrigerated rooms. There is a danger of minor injuries such as cuts, scrapes, and bruises, or heat sealer burns.

In addition, while operating a forklift, the incumbent may receive cuts, bruises and broken bones from shifting loads, toppling stacks, overturning forklifts, falling objects, or accidents with other moving equipment.

Major Duties:

  • Organize proper display areas for merchandise within the commissary.
  • Receive supplies, equipment, and perishable, semi-perishable, and non-perishable resale items in the receiving area of the commissary.
  • Verify shipments by checking the shipping documents, identifying any obvious spoilage, damage, overages, or shortages and reports any differences.
  • Regularly use a forklift, pallet jack or other similar material handling equipment to offload items from the delivery truck or van.
  • Observe merchandise visually to assure proper stock levels, uncluttered aisles, removal of broken items, safe stacking of items and cases, proper temperatures for refrigerated displays, and the return of items moved by customers to the proper place.
  • Break down cases as they are emptied and removes cardboard and garbage from the store.
